Today, in 1630, the first known use of a fork in North America occurred in Massachusetts, when Governor Winthrop used a fork that had been included in a shipment of utensils and other implements that had been sent to him. Reaction ranged from curiosity, to envy, to horror, as some members of the clergy denounced the fork as "evil" and stated spoons, knives, and fingers were the only acceptable items with which to eat food. As the scandal subsided, some prominent families in surrounding areas began eating with forks as a status symbol. With the availability of reasonably priced 4-tine forks in the 1700's and 1800's, forks became commonplace utensils, seen in most homes in a variety of metals and styles. Some of these are still in use today. The #EngTech takeaway: when you are doing something new and innovative, always remember you may be changing the status quo, you may draw some criticism, and you never know how many people or how many years may be influenced by your work.
