Ketton Quarry, located between Rutland Water and the town of Stamford, supplies limestone to the cement works near the town, and as part of the quarry expansion plan a local road had to be deviated over a section of the quarry. As the existing quarry floor was approximately 26m below the level of the new road a bridge was required to span the deep quarry cutting. The road would be supported on embankments leading up to the bridge, but the bridge supports required vertical abutments near the exposed quarry face. We worked closely with the scheme designers (WYG Group) to develop a design for the bridge abutments which had to support high concentrated loads and resist the horizontal forces generated from the integral bridge deck. With a 33.5m bridge span this is one of the longest integral bridge structures supported on Reinforced Earth abutments in the country. We're often asked to design abutments which fully support the bridge reactions without the need for costly column supports or thick RC abutments. The precast concrete facings of this structure were only 140mm thick so providing substantial cost, programme and environmental benefits. #50yearsofReinforcedEarth Terre Armee #Infrastructure #CivilEngineering #BridgeDesign #QuarryExpansion #SustainableConstruction #ReinforcedEarth #EngineeringInnovation #PrecastConcrete #StructuralDesign #EnvironmentalBenefits #CostEffectiveSolutions #IntegralBridge #GeotechnicalEngineering #RoadConstruction #UKInfrastructure

Thanks Frank for your great presentation this morning! One takeaway for me was that of mortarless masonry. The precision required for the stonework to stay together was eye opening to say the least. Contact Frank at Fort Erin Construction to learn more about mortarless stonework or any other masonry questions you may have.

Great video showcasing the technique of constructing Segmental Bridges! which involves building the bridge in small sections known as segments. These segments are then assembled one by one to form the complete bridge. The bridge can be constructed using either the cast-in-place or precast method. construction of this kind of bridge offers the advantages of repetitive construction procedures, minimum impact to traffic and the environment during construction, economical construction, and a durable structure. Segmental construction can be used in a variety of difficult site conditions. Piers can be placed on small footprints superstructures can go over natural hazards and community landmarks, and segmental bridges may be used on a small radius such as curved highway access ramps, as well as large radius bridges. Their slender piers and long shallow superstructures make concrete segmental bridges aesthetically pleasing and the concrete can be colored to blend into the environment. This is our construction site for luminous stones, creating a starlight pavement. Specific construction process: 1. Mixing permeable asphalt mixture. 2. Surface cleaning to maintain a dry and clean surface. 3. Paving asphalt mixture. 4. Sprinkling luminous stones (specifications 8-12mm) directly onto the asphalt surface; followed by compaction with a roller.

Building Stonehenge Is the mystery of Stonehenge that it’s an incomplete highway bridge? A quick look at the pilar-like caps topping columns adjacent to I-35 just south of the I-410 interchange might make you wonder. Construction of the I-35 structures is not as enigmatic as that of Stonehenge, but it’s still amazing. In the video, a crane sets a 75,000-pound cap on two 35-foot-tall bridge columns at night, perfectly aligning the holes in the cap with the steel bars in the top of the column. These are the first structures of their kind on the first phase of I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) South.

How do you build a brand-new grandstand when it’s right next to a busy motorway, backs onto an extremely steep bank and has a tight budget? That was the question we had to answer when we delivered a new permanent Stadia construction project for Exeter Chiefs at their Sandy Park stadium. The answer - an innovative solution that included a suspended ground floor cantilever structure on pile foundations, which mitigated the need for expensive sheet piling. Find out more about how we built the new stand, including new terracing, drainage, infrastructure, seating, elevation treatment and ground works as a turnkey package. https://bit.ly/3P2dpXN #stadiumconstruction

#Funfactfriday - Did you know the Party Wall Act 1996 covers three key types of notifiable work? These include: - Building works affecting boundaries between properties - Excavation within a certain distance of adjoining structures - Alterations to shared party walls Examples include installing beams for loft conversions, removing chimney breasts attached to party walls, and excavating for extensions or basements. If you're planning a project near a shared boundary, ensure you're compliant! Our latest project with Lazian Group calls for no less than 250 steel reinforced concrete piles to ensure stability on a sloping piece of slip prone land. These piles are a vital component in construction, ensuring integrity and strength for structures built on challenging soil conditions. Whether it be a need for enhanced load distribution, more robust foundation support, reduced settlement or increased resistance to lateral forces, steel reinforced concrete piles are the best way to sure up the foundations of a challenging construction. #SteelReinforcement #PileFoundation #StructuralIntegrity
