THE “SUPERMAN” MARKETING JOB DESCRIPTION PROBLEM 😡 I’m here to Rant today! 😫 I’ve been applying for marketing jobs lately, and let me tell you, it’s frustrating as hell. Why do so many employers expect one person to be an entire marketing department? A typical marketing job description goes like this: Be a copywriter, SEO expert, and content strategist. Also, manage social media, create graphics, and edit videos. Run paid ad campaigns on Google and social media platforms. Know how to automate email campaigns and manage CRM tools. Understand website analytics, handle A/B testing, and improve conversion rates. Oh, and while you’re at it, be skilled in web design, UI/UX, and even basic coding. Does this sound like one person’s job? Because that’s not marketing; that’s an entire team. To put this into perspective, imagine if IT job descriptions were like this: A single “IT Specialist” is expected to fix hardware issues, manage networks, provide tech support, develop apps, design software, handle cybersecurity, and maintain cloud systems. Sounds ridiculous, right? Because those are entirely different roles that require specialized skills. It’s the same thing in marketing. Expecting one person to excel in everything is unfair. I get it, companies want value for money 💰, and I’m happy to take on a few additional responsibilities as minor parts of my job. But when you start demanding entire skillsets as “nice-to-haves,” you’re not hiring a marketer; you’re trying to hire a superhuman. And for what? A mid-level salary? 🤦♂️ This approach doesn’t just hurt candidates; it hurts businesses too. Instead of getting someone who excels at their primary role, you end up with people stretched so thin they can’t perform at their best. Let’s normalize realistic job descriptions. Hire for the core skills and goals you actually need, and build teams that complement each other. Asking one person to do everything isn’t cost-effective, it’s counterproductive. If you’ve seen this trend too, especially in marketing or IT, I’d love to hear your thoughts. I know I’m not the only one feeling this frustration! 🗣️ #Marketing2025 #DigitalMarketing #SocialMedia #marketing #HiringPractices #FairHiring #JobSearch #EntryLevel #CareerOpportunities #TalentDevelopment #WorkplaceEquity #HumanResources

As a social media manager, I’ve seen employers expect us to be designers, strategists, analysts, and content creators—all at once. This isn’t sustainable. Marketing requires specialized skills and collaboration. Overloading one role stifles creativity and results. Hire realistic talent for core needs, and watch your brand truly thrive.👍🏻

Hiring a social media manager? looking for a one-person content machine, analytics wizard, and meme lord. No pressure. 😅👑 They group it with: - Email Marketer - Web Designer - Videographer - SEO Expert - Admin Assistant Yes, some small businesses need to combine job duties. But at some point, you’ve got to stop trying to get a two (or three) for one out of people. Each role requires a unique skill set. Each demands focus and expertise. SocialMediaManager should focus on: - Creating content - Engaging with the audience - Analyzing metrics - Developing strategies Adding more roles dilutes the quality of work. It spreads the person too thin. Respect the profession. Understand its value. Agreed? #hrmanagers #dearhr #recruiter #BuildpeopleBuildbusiness #Mondaycontent #highauthorities #interviewer #graduates #freshers #experts #SMM #SocialMediaManager #Job #Jobseeker #Work #ContentCreation

📢 🤠 Jobs roundup! I'm gathering and posting content and marketing jobs to help support the community of pros who have always been so generous to me. This week: JUNIOR-level jobs for early-career editorial and content types. This stuff is all very recent, so go and get it! 🌱 JUNIOR Job Mix: Early-career Editorial and Growth Roles 1. Associate Editor, Health @ Woman's World / First for Women Remote and/or Hybrid (NJ) My take: I came up in women's magazines, and you will never get a better education in publishing and audience than by working for a women's service magazine even if you're not a big consumer of that media type. Also, focusing on health is a truly fantastic and satisfying niche for anyone who is interested in science. (Note to folks with disordered eating or a strong non-diet philosophy: These two titles in particular do quite a bit of weight loss coverage and it might be tough to square that with your needs/values.) The competition for this one is going to be stiff! (https://lnkd.in/gQ5i3VT4) 2. Editorial Fellow @ Business Insider Remote My take: This one has low pay, but you'll get amazing experience and great contacts. Business Insider is the real deal. Seems like a fantastic early-career or pivot opportunity for someone trying to get their foot in the door in media and/or the buying guide/product space, which has been going strong for at least the last five years. (https://lnkd.in/g2RMdKej) 3. Audience/SEO Fellow @ The New York Times Hybrid in NYC (with a salary to match) My take: If I knew what I know now, and it was 15 years ago, I would fight someone to the death for this one. This is only for folks with less than 5 years of professional experience (including internships!). Great opportunity with the fiercest of competition. Go ahead and apply—the worst they can do is not call you. (I applied to the NY Times and was not called lots of times over my career. 😅) (https://lnkd.in/gbupXzBG) 🤔 WHY? I have a content job that enjoy, but I know too many talented writers, editors, and marketers who are underemployed. This is a way to give back and get active in my community again.
