When “Entry-Level” Feels Like a CEO’s To-Do List 🎭✍️ So, I applied for a fresher UI/UX designer role at a "well-reputed" company with a modest size of 50-200 employees. Cool, right? Until I got THE ASSIGNMENT. They wanted me to redesign their entire web app—yes, 10-12 screens—in 5-7 days. Let’s pause here. For context, this is for a junior role. Not a freelance project. Not a consulting gig. Just a “prove-you-deserve-this-entry-level-job” task. Ab batao, fresher hoon koi Steve Jobs thodi! Aisa laga naukri nhi poora product launch karwa rahe hai merese🥲😅 Don’t get me wrong. I love a good challenge. I’ve spent nights redesigning for Limurse and watching retention rates and downloads soar. But this? This felt like something else entirely. What stings isn’t just the size of the task—it’s the underlying vibe of undervaluing time, effort, and creativity. Assignments like these don’t evaluate potential; they drain passion. Here’s my message to hiring teams: 🎯 Be mindful. Test skills without exploiting them. ⏳ Respect candidates’ time, especially when they’re starting out. 💬 Offer constructive feedback (ghosting is so last season). Fellow designers, I know the struggle is real, but keep pushing. Let’s keep advocating for better industry practices while staying true to our craft. Here are the red flags I've observed- 1️⃣ "Pay for Portfolio Review" Scams Companies demanding money to review your portfolio or "guarantee" job placement. Legitimate firms will never ask you to pay for opportunities. 2️⃣ Fake Design Tests (Most common ones) Be wary of extensive "test projects" that look suspiciously like real client work. While design tests are common, they should be reasonable in scope and not feel like free work. 3️⃣ Suspicious Interview Processes Watch out for "interviews" conducted only via WhatsApp or Telegram, especially when they quickly lead to requests for personal documents or bank details. 4️⃣ Too-Good-To-Be-True Salaries If a company offers dramatically higher pay than market rate for entry-level positions, proceed with caution. How do I get opportunities as a fresher Product or UX/UI Designer?🧐 I get this question a lot. Here are my tips based on the challenges freshers face in landing a job: 1. Create Strong Case Studies    Case studies are crucial for landing a job. They can be showcased on Behance, a personal website, Notion, Medium, or elsewhere. A detailed case study is essential. I recommend including at least 2 mobile apps and 2 web apps in your portfolio and a few websites 2. Approach the Right Way Be in the right place at the right time. Apply across multiple platforms, not just one. Expanding your reach increases your chances of finding opportunities. 3. Network and Ask for Referrals   Reach out to people working at companies you're interested in or message design member, HR and founders. A well-crafted message asking for a referral can help you stand out.   *Note: Ensure your messages are well-written and free of grammatical errors. Poor grammar can be a turn-off.* 4. Frame a Good Resume Highlight relevant experience and skills in your resume. Make sure it’s ATS-friendly and that your portfolio link is easily clickable. 5. Showcase Your Work Regularly display your work. This visibility helps attract recruiters and provides social proof of your skills. 6. Work Hard Many freshers can work hard, and it pays off.
