Being a therapist doesn't mean I have perfect mental health; far from it. There was one time I felt completely overwhelmed, and I had to step back and ask myself, what would I tell a client in this situation? So I went back to basics. I practice the self-care I always recommend, the mindfulness, the deep breathing, and then I do something I often suggest to my clients. I reached out to my support system. There have been times when my friends and my family have reminded me to practice self-care, too. Even as a therapist, I need those gentle nudges. Therapists are human too. We need self-care and support, and sometimes, we need to hear advice from the people who care most about us. Taking your advice and letting others remind you isn't a weakness. It's growth.
