🎶 When Music Hurts: The Dark Side of Melodies 🎶
We often think of music as a source of joy and healing, but what if it isn’t?
What if music—the universal language of connection—sometimes pulls us into a wave of sadness we can’t escape?
As someone who has battled anxiety and depression for years, I know firsthand how a single song can feel like an emotional ambush.
That melody you loved?
It can suddenly reopen old wounds, dragging you into a spiral of despair.
Why does this happen?
Neuroscience tells us that music is deeply tied to the emotional centers of our brain, making it both a comfort and a potential trigger.
But here’s the good news: we don’t have to let music control us.
💡 Here’s how I fight back when music triggers those emotions:
🌬️ Grounding Breathing Technique:
1️⃣ Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 counts (1…2…3…4).
2️⃣ Hold your breath for 4 counts (1…2…3…4).
3️⃣ Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 counts (1…2…3…4…5…6).
This simple exercise helps me stay present, reminding me that I’m in control—not my emotions.

By curating playlists, reframing emotional connections, and seeking support, I’ve learned to turn music from a trigger into a tool for healing. It’s a journey, but one worth taking.

One of the quickest ways to shift your state is by listening to music that reflects the state we want to be in.
🎵 For example, if you’re craving a boost of energy, you might listen to music that makes you feel energised.
🎵 Or if you’re feeling self-conscious, you might put on music that makes you feel confident.
But we can go a step further and explore why music evokes certain moods, or memories, or feelings.
We can get curious with things like “why is it that this song makes me feel nostalgic? Or confident? And what does it mean about me?”
Music is a very powerful way to reveal aspects of ourselves we didn’t know were there. And you can access them just by listening actively and taking note of your thoughts.

🎶 What's your jam?
Music elicits a universal response, deeply embedded in our evolutionary progress, that significantly changes our emotions and movements.
I have a playlist for every mood and listening to certain types of music also alters my mood. Depending on the music I listen to, my mood can shift from sad to happy, deflated to energized, or hopeless to hopeful.
When I feel beaten, I have a playlist titled 'Unstoppable', and that snaps me out of my self-critical mode to a mindset of 'I can do it'.

Music can be so magical. It can transport us back in time to a specific memory, or phase in our life. It can make us feel powerful feelings, at times maybe even overwhelming feelings. There's lots of science to support how and why this happens (that we won't bore you with), but it is truly a connection to the inner workings of our brains!
So use the power of music to shift your mood. Build a playlist of songs that make you feel lighter, happier, more fun, and play them as often as possible. Find songs that make you feel powerful, courageous, and important, and play them before meetings or gatherings where you need a confidence boost. Use music to calm you during your no screen time before bed.
