25 years ago today - 28th March 1999 - I landed in the UK. 19 years old, as full with optimism as my spikey fringe was full with wax Following a stint pulling pints behind a bar, somewhere deep underground on the Piccadilly Line between Covent Garden and Manor House, I ripped out an ad from the job section of The Evening Standard: Three month Christmas temp positions available at Selfridges. I arrived early for the interview, wearing a borrowed suit. There were two openings that would potentially suit me: Stationary or Ladies Eveningwear. I knew nothing about Ladies Eveningwear but also knew I did not want to be selling "Welcome to Y2K" branded pens and pencils for the next three months....I suggested Ladies Eveningwear. The interviewer agreed. What followed was a previously unthinkable 25 year career. I'm relocating back to Australia in April to start my next chapter. I've spent more time in the UK then I have in Australia. Am I heading home or leaving home? As my horoscope is bound to predict, this week I'm feeling reflective. Burberry was transformative for me: 3 years on the shopfloor followed by 11 years in Wholesale and Merchandising. Led by two amazing CEO's - Rose Marie Bravo followed by Angela Ahrendts - there was one person who I owe my career to. Michele Smith. Definitely over 5 feet tall with towering black wedges, arguably under 5 feet tall without them, she taught me Merchandising is like driving a car.....driving forward new ideas and concepts but constantly checking the data in the rear view mirror for any potential pot holes in the road. She also taught me to always appreciate retail staff, lead with empathy and that when the wedges come off in the showroom, it's time to pull your sleeves up. After a few half-hearted false starts in the past, this time feels right to head back to Australia and start the next chapter. I'm driving forward but the UK will always be in my rear view mirror.

Greetings to hiring managers. Can you guys actually do the applicants a favor and give them feedback on why you don't even consider their resume or experience for an interview, all I see from big companies an automated reply “ sorry we decided to go ahead with other candidates “ ??? I have barely seen anyone getting hired purely from linkedin or by interest, but on the other hand if there is reference one gets easily hired while someone capable doesn't even deserve a ring to nod into their perspective and talent?? Its disheartening to a level where people lose their energy to even seek for opportunity I don't know how one can actually be seen to at least have a one on one round with the candidate. Buy a few key pieces like jackets and shirts for special occasions in your close circle. Wardrobe for 45 weeks should be simple and cost effective. The rest 7 weeks wardrobe has high variance.
