Never rely on one dominant supplier or customer. In 2021 I ended up having one dominant customer who is a property developer, he would give me so much work I was prioritising him over many other clients, I would send my drivers and I would immediately pay the drivers their commission. The drivers loved this arrangement. I would get paid weekly. The client was now diversifying and opening a security company and wanted me to transport the guards, his partner for the security company was living in Benoni. I got a request to send as many trucks to got and help in the construction at the director’s home in Benoni, I sent four Hyundai H100 trucks and 2 Nissan UD trucks.
My Hyundai trucks started breaking down due to the huge distance they were travelling carrying heavy loads. I also had one mechanic I was using, I thought it made it easier. That mechanic started delaying fixing the trucks and would not answer his phone. The client’s proposed security venture fell out and his relationship with the director in Benoni became sour they abandoned the project. When the day came for payment came, he didn’t pay me. I had to struggle to get part of the payment. All of a sudden I could see everything falling off, luckily I had bought my trucks cash over the years when I was still employed and I didn’t need to pay the bank anything.
I learnt an important lesson, I work with at least 4 mechanics, they actually beg for work, they all know that someone else is on standby for that work should they act funny. Having one dominant customer may seem like the best thing, take it from me it’s not, you are at the mercy of that customer. It is very important to diversify your customer base. Try to vertically or horizontally integrate in your industry.
Good luck and happy hustling.
Good morning, legends! 👀 CVSA 2024 Roadcheck Results are out and it shows that 23% of vehicles and 4.8% of drivers were put out of service between May 14-16. WHY?⬇️⬇️
🔧 Top vehicle violations:
● Defective service brakes
● Tires
● Brake violations
● Lights
● Cargo securement
📝 Top driver violations:
● Hours of service
● No CDL
● No medical card
● False logs
● Suspended license
Comparing to last year, drivers did a slightly better job in staying compliant. However, the importance of safety checks remains crucial!
❗Drivers, remember to double-check your brakes, tires, lights, and documentation to stay compliant and avoid OOS orders. Safety first, always!

Drivers need to take personal accountability. Most drivers getting into trucking want quick money and the government messed up by making commercial driving a fast track to PR out of necessity for the economy, opening up the flood gates to mass immigration.
Pair that with the loopholes in the system of testing, English as a second language not being met or falsified, allowing translations into their native tongue when all the road signs in North America are in English or French (Quebec).
I recently renewed my CDL in Brampton January of 2024 and witnessed first hand the young Punjabi driver ahead of me fail his 15th attempt at receiving his commercial license- and at some point, he will pass and we will give him a license. When is enough?!
I’ve had drivers apply to companies where I’ve been part of the safety management and the drivers openly brag they paid as much as $10k for a dummy license from a fraudulent school, church. Or, worse yet- they were “sponsored” under the agreement they work for Pennie’s on the dollar until paid back and are using it as a money mill.
Commercial driving has always been a skilled trade in Ontario and still is.
I completed the program myself in 2014, with some fantastic driver mentors and I’m now “Journeyman” commercial driver. With background in Flatbed, oversized, hazmat tanker among other skill sets including commercial motor vehicle accident investigation to name a few. Through that training, I received a much deeper level of education, understanding and appreciation of the industry.
I’ve since moved into safety, compliance, training and safety management as I believe this can still be a respectable and safe profession. The old saying goes- “ Be the change you want to see”; and I believe Accountability in ongoing training and education is what’s required as the rules, laws, technology are always changing.

If you are an operator of commercial vehicles, I would highly recommend that you take a minute to give this article a read...
We all know that the vision around lorries has been significantly improved, however, we also know that it is not completely foolproof.
The advice in this article could be the difference between a driver being left in a difficult position or being protected if the worst were to happen.

Thieves use recovery trucks to steal cars.
Thieves can use recovery trucks to steal cars.
The vehicles are then taken far to a car repair shop or garage, where they are dismantled for parts or sold for scrap.
The vehicles can also be sold with counterfeit papers after falsifying their vin (vehicle identification number) , operation called a "make-up". they can also change the colour of the car and it's interior.
Recovery trucks are useful in these criminal cases because they aren't suspicious.
