The European 🇪🇺 #steel 🏭 industry is in trouble. High energy prices, demand crunch, potential trade wars on our doorstep, imminent investment needs...& the urgency to deeply cut emissions, to reduce future #EUETS liability with rising CO2 cost & the phase out of free allocations. So far, the industry has mainly bought time & painted itself into a corner by throwing all its eggs 🥚🥚 in the #greenhydrogen basket 🧺 - without any realistic plan or prospect for getting access to #hydrogen at a relevant scale. 🇪🇺 Steel now risks becoming the perhaps most dramatic victim of the #hydrogenhype; even Germany 🇩🇪 now acknowledges that H2 shipping is not a real option: https://lnkd.in/etpvNuTJ This is a challenging space, but it can also be one of opportunity. 2025 will be the year when we either succeed in saving this strategic (not least in the current geopolitical situation) and welfare-bearing industry Europe, helping it on a future-proof path to #netzero emissions, or allow it to continue its slide toward the cliff's edge, risking not only hundreds of thousands of jobs but ultimately also 🇪🇺 #climateambition. We at Bellona Europa / Bellona Deutschland / Bellona know which outcome we want & have done our homework, analysing the various climate technology pathways, looking at their potential, energy & resource demand, risks and opportunities. This report is not intended to provide *the* solution for fixing the steel industry. It provides the basic data we need to succeed in this urgent work, with all relevant stakeholders & policy makers, ensuring the #EUCleanIndustrialDeal delivers on its promise. 🔧 Did you know that #steel production contributes to 5% of the EU’s total CO₂ emissions? Steel is essential to our society and plays a key role in needed technologies for the #greentransition. Yet, its production is indeed a major source of emissions. ⬇️ Our new report examines current steelmaking methods, explores their decarbonisation pathways, and compares greenhouse gas emissions across various production routes. Read our report below & explore the pathways to net-zero for European steel! https://lnkd.in/dmhSAzgF #decarbonisation #steel #netzero #industrialdecarbonisation #climateaction #climateactionnow #netzeroemissions

5dInteresting stuff, Jonas. Still have to go through the whole thing but I already like how Bellona highlighted the fact that hydrogen for steelmaking provides the higher mitigation potential of all hydrogen applications. We already know that green hydrogen should be handled like expensive champagne and not cheap wine. Let's prioritize the use for where it makes sense.
