Ever played in a captain's choice/scramble golf event? I get to do this once or twice a year, and when I do, for the last 20 years at least, it's been 100% registration as a team - with 3 other pre-selected people who build a foursome for this future event. Until Monday. I played as a "single". I know - totally throwing: 1) caution to the wind 2) out all perceived competitive advantage "my team" has 3) comfort of knowing who you're riding with 4) out any ego that I deserve to be on some elite squad of scratch golfers I'm tempted to only register as a single when possible from here on out. Here's why: 1) You'd be amazed how quickly everyone just owns their play. 2) We all start at zero with zero pressure to prove anything, which means we all just play each hole, each stroke with everything to prove, but also nothing at all. 3) I met an orthopedic surgeon 4) I met a GM for a local hotel 5) I met a local brick and mortar travel agent 6) For 4 hours, our team was doing what these events are intended to do - create networking opportunities, create new connections, build a community. But, this is golf. Even if you suck. And, if you haven't registered as a single, or if you always play with "your group", then consider this a challenge to go out on your own, to play with a new group every once in a while. Mix it up. We're so different and yet so similar. I know this - there's miles and miles of fairway ahead of us, but we never know how many holes we might have left.
