We have to walk before we can run… In order to develop a young leader, we have to teach him/her to be a leader of one first. Young athletes must learn responsibility and accountability before they can be entrusted to lead others. Show me a player who: * shows up on time * carries their own gear * stands game-ready at all times * cleans up after themselves Mastery of these simple tasks exemplifies a leader of one who is ready to lead others. Yesterday, I visited the awe inspiring YMCA Newark and Sherwood Activity Village and spent the day with fellow strategic leaders from across the #YMCA network learning from the brilliant Todd C. about values based leadership. He asked us to list our top three values, and I struggled as you can see, but when forced to choose they are: - Authenticity - Joy - Humility What are your values, and how do they show up in your leadership? #values #valuesbasedleadership #leadership

The truth hurts sometimes… The value of perspective allows us to understand where we are without forgetting how we got here. We may not always like what we’ve discovered, but we’ve learned nonetheless. This sense of perspective allows us to be impactful leaders if we can utilize what we’ve learned as a tool to develop others. Utilizing perspective is the job of a coach. Those who belong to the old school of leadership by force must acquire an understanding of the new brand of leadership (Cooperation) or be relegated to the rank and file of the followers. There’s no other way out for them. #Leadership

One of the best parts about Rocky is being able to complete your program from ANYWHERE! All you need is an internet connection! This made a huge difference for Lucas as he was juggling work, family, and school and didn't have to leave his community to pursue his BA in Leadership Development. #christianeducation #christiancollege #biblecollege #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #christianfaith #OnlineEducation

Perspective: “I would rather ride than lead” This past Saturday, one of the volunteer mentors out at Refuge Ranch made that comment. It had nothing to do with mentoring, she was referring to working with horses. Either choice is ok, just different. Riding can feel more straightforward and enjoyable. It allows you to follow a path or direction set by someone else. On the flip side, leading comes with the responsibility of navigating challenges, making decisions, and guiding others. Both roles have their own unique challenges and rewards. It’s ok for leaders to “ride” sometimes, but remember why you wanted to be a leader.
