Pisciculture, also known as fish farming, is the practice of breeding and raising fish in controlled environments such as tanks, ponds, or reservoirs. This method is used to produce fish for food, sport, or ornamental purposes. Pisciculture is a crucial component of aquaculture, which involves the cultivation of aquatic organisms. Key aspects of pisciculture include: 1. Types of Fish: Common species farmed include freshwater fish like tilapia, catfish, and carp, as well as saltwater species like salmon and shrimp. 2. Facilities: Fish farming can take place in ponds, tanks, or more advanced systems such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), which filter and reuse water. 3. Feeding: Fish are provided with specialized feed, designed to meet their nutritional requirements. 4. Water Quality Management: Regular monitoring of water parameters (temperature, pH, oxygen levels, etc.) is critical to ensure optimal growth conditions. 5. Harvesting: Fish are harvested once they reach market size, which varies depending on the species. Pisciculture helps to meet the global demand for seafood while reducing the pressure on wild fish stocks, though it requires careful management to prevent environmental issues such as water pollution and the spread of disease.

Sustainable fish production requires us to embrace fish farming as a key part of the solution. As the farmed vs wild discussion often becomes overly polarized / sensationalized, I wanted to address common misconceptions based on my experience on-the-ground, having seen the industry first hand building Aquabyte #sustainablefishproduction #aquaculture #forbes

🔎Great coverage by DeSmog revealing the 'skewed numbers' used by industrial aquaculture. According to new research, the global fish farming industry uses as much as 307% more wild fish than previously reported. Contrary to industry's claims that it is helping to 'feed the world', aquaculture is depleting wild fisheries that would otherwise be used by coastal communities. “On net, it is very clear that the industry destroys food”, said Spencer Roberts (research team lead). “It’s not feeding the world, but actually starving people”. SA government and private companies should consider agroforestry, not only as a climate mitigation strategy, which I admit it is, but also as a better livestock production, soil protection, water retention and rural employment creation strategy. In the accompanying article the USDA and Nature Conservancy are showing leadership in the funding and implementation of agroforestry in the US.

BSF in the news: "Taking fish farming in Nigeria to the next level" "We use wolffia as one of the feeds for our herbivorous fish (tilapia, heterotis and common carp) and black soldier fly for our carnivorous fish (catfish). Black soldier fly is only a supplementary feed but the overall cost of feed is reduced and it has increased our farm's profitability by 11 percent." Want to learn about the best practices of Black Soldier Fly farming, get access to FREE BSF farming tools such as a BSF business case calculator, an insect farm management tool, learning center and knowledge base with both short training courses as well as longer webinar recordings, and more?
