This method is used to produce fish for food, sport, or ornamental purposes. Pisciculture is a crucial component of aquaculture, which involves the cultivation of aquatic organisms. Key aspects of pisciculture include: 1. Types of Fish: Common species farmed include freshwater fish like tilapia, catfish, and carp, as well as saltwater species like salmon and shrimp. 2. Facilities: Fish farming can take place in ponds, tanks, or more advanced systems such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), which filter and reuse water. 3. Feeding: Fish are provided with specialized feed, designed to meet their nutritional requirements. 4. Water Quality Management: Regular monitoring of water parameters (temperature, pH, oxygen levels, etc.) is critical to ensure optimal growth conditions. 5. Harvesting: Fish are harvested once they reach market size, which varies depending on the species. Pisciculture helps to meet the global demand for seafood while reducing the pressure on wild fish stocks, though it requires careful management to prevent environmental issues such as water pollution and the spread of disease.

According to new research, the global fish farming industry uses as much as 307% more wild fish than previously reported.
