Our study, entitled “Resistance of juvenile Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus from Brazilian populations to Streptococcus agalactiae (serotype Ib and ST-NT)”, explores genetic parameters for group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection resistance in Nile tilapia, a key species in aquaculture worldwide. Conducted by Rubens Ricardo de O. Neto during his master studies at São Paulo State University (Unesp), under the supervision of Diogo Teruo Hashimoto, our findings reveal promising insights into selective breeding programs for disease resistance without compromising growth. Breeding the Perfect Peruvian Paso Horse 🐎: Genetic parameters like overreach, term, and acuteness are crucial for improving the Peruvian Paso Horse (PPH). A preliminary study by Dr. José Dextre Chacón et al involving 137 stallions and mares under field conditions reveals that overreach and term show high heritability, making them ideal for selective breeding. Acuteness, though moderately heritable, offers room for improvement. Collaboration key to ultimate genotypes in #plants and #livestock University of Queensland researchers are setting the agenda for breeding high yield, heat tolerant and disease-resistant crops and low emission cattle with excellent feed conversion efficiency as they search for the ultimate genotype. Professor Ben Hayes from UQ’s Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) said the ultimate genotype can improve the performance of the best individuals in a species population up to 6 times, and has been demonstrated in dairy cattle, wheat and chickpea. “With millions of cattle and plants now genome profiled, we can imagine what ultimate genotypes look like – with the best chunks of genome from across a population stacked into one ‘ultimate individual’,” Professor Hayes said. “We believe rapid advances in gene editing and synthetic biology are potential pathways to get to that target as quickly as possible.” Professor Hayes said there were limitations to trying to achieve the ultimate genotype using conventional methods..... https://bit.ly/4hPXYid Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) UQ #Australia #Genotypes
