Stop complaining- The dawn of Gen Z coming of age and influence gives me great heart. So far I have only witnessed and experienced young people in this group who want to get on, do good things, learn and prosper. When I meet older people (some of whom are younger than me!), complaining and moaning about ‘Gen Z’ers’ I think about watching the sun rise on a mountain with my son Michael Brown and about 30 others of similar age to him (and noone else of my age or even close!), all of whom got up in the early hours to climb a rocky path, requiring planning and exertion. They shared a sense of wonder for the world, a zest for life and coming from many different countries and cultures, a sense of unity. If you’ve had a bad experience of a Gen Zer working for you then I’d say you take responsibility for getting your recruitment process wrong, there are plenty of good ones out there to choose from, and with over 30 years in recruitment, I can tell you I’ve seen plenty worse in other age brackets too! [Career Promotion Myth #11] If I do a good job, I’ll get offered opportunities to progress my career   "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Rita Mae Brown   I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard that “the” reason women and people from underrepresented groups in tech don’t reach leadership positions is their lack of confidence.   That's not in my experience.    Since my university days studying Chemical Engineering in Venezuela, I’ve been surrounded by women confident in their skills and with ambitious goals. Same during my Ph.D. in Canada and my post-doc in Greece. And has not been different in commercial settings. First in France in a chemical company and for decades for a software company.    So maybe because of that, or because I was raised by strong women, or even because of my life as an immigrant, “confidence” never appeared like something I needed to work on.   But I was not counting on the gap between my perception and the patronising tech environment where “benevolent sexism” runs rampant.    You don’t get offered to participate in that plum project because somebody higher up   -       “knows” you may not be a good fit – without asking you. -       “feels” you have too much on your plate – without telling you. -       “believes” you won’t be interested – without consulting you. How did I break that cycle? It required a multi prong approach and a key piece of that strategy was to learn to self-coach myself.    For example, I identified how my thoughts about how promotions work were impacting my actions and my results. Dear Tumo Center for Creative Technologies CEO and HR department, While following your activities, the progress and getting deeper into your objectives and values, I thought you are a serios and unique organization where true, experienced and motivated professionals are working with the objective to bring a positive change to the generation. Instead, I found TUMO an ordinary Armenian style NGO as those tens of thousands who just starve from funding to simulate "professional activities". I am really shocked and disappointed. As a result of my application to one of the advertised positions, you initiated 7 interviews during the last two months, with different departments, once a week asking the same simple questions with very serious face, thus wasting my time, expectations and efforts. For 2 months, you have been playing with me in order to tell me that "due to some planned structural changes we cannot move further with my candidacy, so that probably you can offer me another position, bla bla bla". This is ridiculous. I am more than confident that you have selected a person with a personal connection or based on the "high level call/request" as those thousands of Armenian NGOs are doing. The worst thing is that you are educating young Armenian generation, I am scared of the future of my country realizing that such organizations are fully engaged in educating a new generation. Please from now on, keep away from inviting me to your basic interviews and task meetings. I can confidently argue that none of you, including your CEO have capacities, skills, knowledge and professionalism to examine me. In other words, դեռ լիքը հաց ու պանիր պետք է ուտեք։ Regards, SM

Young people are losing opportunities because they’re not “polished” enough. Which might translate as: — Having a regional accent. — Having no connections in the industry. — Having no expensive suit to wear to interviews. In other words… They’re working class. Big corporates bang the drum for diversity & inclusion. Yet, in most professions… Class prejudice still goes unchallenged. Perhaps because it’s less ‘visible’? So here’s a reminder: A person’s accent, mannerisms or clothes do not signal their ability to do a good job. Agreed? 🤷🏽♂️ PS. “When everyone is included, everyone wins.” After college, I applied for a job as a GET at a pesticide company. To my shock, during the campus interview process, people told me the role was meant only for men. “Women are only fit for consulting jobs. This job needs a man’s touch,” they said repeatedly. I had a choice: walk away or prove them wrong. I chose the latter. “I will crack this interview today and do a great job every day,” I told myself. With determination, I walked into the group discussion and answered every question to the best of my ability. At the end of the day, the results were announced. My name was on the list. Everyone was stunned. But it didn’t end there. Many said it was a fluke and predicted I’d leave within six months. I switched companies, evolved as a professional, and now, seven years later, I wonder what they will say. Creating an inclusive workplace isn’t easy. People engagement is key to fostering a culture of safety and good health. To me, the cycle of seeing, doing, and teaching must be continuous, backed by measurable metrics. Today marks my last day as a Diversity & Inclusion consultant at Diversifying Group. I have been reflecting on my 2 and a half years with Diversifying Group and wanted to share some of the learnings and experiences I gained from my time with them. 👓 Exposure to Different Sectors  New day, new sector. I got to work in different sectors including education, tech, financial, creative, retail and charity sectors. Each sector taught me something about how D&I works in their environments. It inspired my creativity to provide innovative recommendations and use best practices from other sectors to drive inclusion. 🌎 Global Work Although I was sitting at home in London, I was working worldwide, supporting global clients. You might have seen me pop into your training in America, or a webinar in Austria, or been influenced by my research on D&I in your region. 💼 Breaking Barriers in Recruitment   Diversifying Group is filled with expert recruiters. By working with them I got to build my knowledge of the ins and outs of recruitment, understand how recruitment has developed over the years and influence the future of inclusive recruitment. 💍 Engagement  Not just engaging different stakeholders at different levels, in different sectors with different characteristics. But also engaging people on social media in D&I and inclusive workplaces. 👩🎓 Peer Learning  I learnt a lot from my colleagues. They shared experiences of their own and their communities, bettering my understanding of what different communities within D&I experience. I also learnt a lot about the things they were interested in, such as amazing frogs with three eyes, the power of music on emotions and the final girl in horror films. I would like to thank my colleagues and clients for shaping my 2.5 years at Diversifying Group, I value everything you have taught me and the opportunities you have provided me. ❓ What’s next Yani?  I’m still Open to Work and looking for my next opportunity.
