If President-elect Trump tries to negotiate a peace deal for Ukraine, one that involves Ukraine losing *some* territory, Putin will probably accept it in principle. This will put NATO in a dilemma — if they push Kyiv to accept it because de-escalation will be better for economies and security all around, they’ll seem unprincipled. If they tell him not to accept the deal, they’ll have to make up for the gap from America’s resource withdrawal. And of course Putin will accept the deal (in theory) because if he makes Trump look good, Trump will be amenable to sharing state secrets with him, or just being nice to Russia. My personal opinion: do we need NATO at this point or at all? We already saw how the alliance is not able to protects its members (missiles, drones flying over NATO territory with not actions, being on standby mode, ready to be deeply concerned). Today, Ukrainian army is the most experienced army in the world. What we really need, is to create new security alliance with those countries which are bordering with russia. With such approach we will minimize the risks of russia attacking other countries cause the member of new alliance will intervene. And the time for reaction will be much faster than western countries did at the beginning of full scale war in Ukraine.
