If you attended #GrrCON this year, you might have noticed something different. In a twist of irony, the DeVos Convention Center was hosting both our hacking conference and an Amish conference at the same time. The social dynamics were fascinating as we observed the collision of two worlds at opposite extremes of the technological spectrum. We have a massive $200 billion dollar industry dedicated to attempting to solve all the problems related to cybersecurity, but still struggle to secure our digital lives. And yet, they have achieved peace-of-mind and personal security without spending a dime. While I certainly don't think we should abandon technology, this was a great reminder that the purpose of technology is to solve problems. We should be more carefully considering the cost of increased complexity (particularly in AI solutions) and whether the value generated by those solutions is worth the incurred cost.
