Youth Homelessness Matters Day is the annual national awareness day for youth homelessness in Australia. Started by a group of social advocates who believed that too many young people were moving out of home with no where to go, the day has since grown into a national celebration of young people's resilience. In addition to providing a safe and comfortable home, a key focus of our Youth Transition Hub for Homes Victoria and WAYSS is to provide services and facilities to equip young residents, aged typically between 16-18, with skills for independent living, preparing them for the next stage in their lives. This includes a productive garden to teach kids how to grow their own food and become a little more self-sufficient, and a training kitchen which helps to teach them the art of home-cooking, a skill they may have missed out on growing up. Completed in 2020, this project has already had a lasting influence on the young people who have been temporarily housed here. We hope that we as a nation can develop more sustainable and innovative solutions such as this. #youthhomelessnessmatters #YHMD24 #socialhousing #publichousing #sustainablehousing

Today is National Youth Homelessness Matters day & we call on all Australians to join us in making ‘unaccompanied’ children & young people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing homelessness, a priority for our Federal Government. Unaccompanied children & young people (15 to 25) make up nearly 1/3rd of our homeless population- in 22/23 that was 39,000 unaccompanied children & young people either sleeping rough, couch surfing or experiencing unsafe or insecure living conditions. And these numbers ONLY represent the children/ young people who accessed the Speacialist Homelessness Services system. This #YHMD we ask you to help us elevate these children & young people’s voice, validate their experiences & prioritise solutions designed specifically for them through the development of a standalone National Child & Youth Homelessness Plan. Sign the Yfoundations petition https://lnkd.in/gAPjU-aQ and tell our government that our community stands with these children & young people. Our systems have failed them- we cannot afford too. One of the elements of our Theory of Change is doing what it takes. For us that means addressing immediate needs and tailoring support to suit each person. In the current housing market that’s challenging, and our Housing and Homelessness team are doing a great job. The proportion of people who were in unstable, unsafe or unaffordable housing when they engaged our services continues to grow. Our specialist homelessness services continue to achieve strong outcomes in securing and sustaining housing, but this work is taking much longer and is more complex. Whether it’s supporting people to keep their tenancy, ringing around to find accommodation, or pulling on the gum boots and going out to wherever there are people in need, YFS workers are doing what it takes. The theme for Homelessness Week 2024 is “Homelessness Action Now”. We all need to work together to take action and do what it takes to end homelessness. #HW2024 #HomelessnessWeek2024

Homelessness Week: Urgent Call for Change! Queensland is seeing a rise in families needing short-term emergency accommodation due to the shortage of affordable housing. This is a stark reminder of the need for action now. For families with young children, staying in a hotel or motel long-term presents challenges like: • Disrupted routines • Limited space • Lack of familiarity • Privacy issues • Restricted access to resources. The emotional impact on both parents and children can be significant. Community services play a crucial role in easing these transitions and providing stability. Let's come together to support those in need. #HomelessnessWeek #Homesforkids #SupportFamilies #AffordableHousing

IS CHILD AND YOUTH HOMELESSNESS DESTINED TO BE A FOREVER PROBLEM? Earlier this year, Upstream Australia’s David MacKenzie and Tammy Hand wrote an article for the CHP’s magazine, Parity, titled, ‘Is child and youth homelessness destined to be a forever problem?’ A key takeaway from the article is below: “For youth homelessness, a genuinely strategic approach means rethinking the system in a way that actually puts young people and their needs at the centre by refocusing planning and funding and services in an ecosystem around young people that extends beyond the SHS and includes schools and other specialist services and community-based stakeholders. The overarching reform is to shift from the service delivery status-quo of siloed targeted programs to a place-based ‘collective impact’ local integrated support system of prevention and early intervention, crisis accommodation, and post homelessness supportive housing combined with support for young people to remain engaged in education and/or deal with mental health issues as well as other adverse extant issues.” #endhomelessness #prevention #earlyintervention #socialhousing #housing #homelessnessweek

It's Youth Homelessness Matters Day Housing is a human right. Every child and young person deserves a safe, stable and affordable place to call their home. Did you know that almost 39,000 children and young people presented alone to specialist homelessness services last year, and that across Australia there are zero affordable rental properties for a person on Youth Allowance? Youth homelessness involves intersectional vulnerabilities, such as disability, discrimination, domestic and family violence, and mental health concerns. Compounding this is a lack of safe and stable housing options, and funding impacts on service capacity that see many children and young people turned away when seeking support. We can do better for children and young people. We can end cycles of insecurity. We can call for a national approach to ending child and youth homelessness, that will structure solutions in ways that are achievable, and will ensure services are adequately funded. Today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day - and while youth homelessness matters every day, today's a vital reminder of the importance of our state (and country) having an effective system to support young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Nearly 16,000 young people came to Victorian homelessness services in 2022/23. These young people are poorly served in a housing and homelessness system built around adult assumptions of personal and financial independence. Without access to the tools needed to end their homelessness, many young people commence a lifetime of episodic homelessness. So this Budget, CHP is calling on the Government to fund a new model for youth housing that includes: 🏠 Dedicated social housing for young people; 🤝 Support for young people with concurrent mental illness and homelessness; and 💡 A youth homelessness strategy to prevent young people falling into homelessness in the first place. Join our call and let's build a future of opportunity and hope for young Victorians experiencing homelessness. #youthhomelessness #TheHomelessnessBudget #VicBudget #VicPol #endhomelessness #homelessnesscrisis #homelessness

Youth and adolescents Homelessness plagues Barcelona neighborhoods especially with the pandemic we are still facing the youth homelessness percentage is over the top. This project focuses on youth and adolescents who currently reside in homeless shelters and in the streets. Traumatic stress from experiences that forced a young person into homelessness makes coping with the challenges of daily survival on the streets, and the ultimate goal of overcoming homelessness, very difficult. Surviving proves even more challenging when the shelters children depend on for daily, basic necessities cannot provide for their needs. The goal of Hands of Hope is to aid underperforming homeless shelters so they can provide them with basic living necessities, and to teach youth homeless the valuable tool of personal resilience through arts-based trauma-informed programming. Our mission is to support youth and adolescent homeless with basic living necessities and social supports while teaching them the valuable tool of personal resilience to overcome challenges associated with homelessness. Hands of Hope will provide homeless young people a place to stay while they get the help they need to move on to independence, because a safe warm room is the first crucial step to breaking the cycle of homelessness. We will provide a brighter future for young people, by providing 150 bed for a start from the age of 16-25 years old. #youthhomelessness #weare1 #spanishngo #youthempowerment
