Dhaka Metro Rail is part of Bangladesh's plan to provide sustainable transport in the rapidly growing capital city, home to over 22 million people. As rural and coastal migrants seek better opportunities, Dhaka has become one of the world's most crowded urban areas. The metro rail network will have six planned lines covering 140 kilometers to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. MRT Line-1, one of these lines, will be Bangladesh's first underground metro railway. RISE Structural Design, Inc. designed the stations along MRT-1. The rail line stretching 31.24 kilometers will connect Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and Kamalapur Railway Station. It will have two sections: the 19.87-kilometer underground Airport route and the 11.369-kilometer elevated Purbachal Route. Construction of the train line had already started when RISE was tasked with designing these stations. This added constraints to their project - the height of the tracks and platforms was already set. The design team used Bentley software to model and analyze the strength of the steel structures and concrete stresses within those predetermined constraints. This approach helped reduce 10% to 15% of the concrete used to support the beams and helped to reduce the project's overall carbon footprint. When it is finished, MRT-1 is expected to carry 800,000 passengers. #engineering #structuralengineering #railway #infrastructure #transportation #bangladesh #DhakaMetro

Building for the Future: Responsibility, Integrity, and Quality in Indian Infrastructure India is pouring billions of taxpayers’ money into transforming its infrastructure—whether it’s airports, highways, or urban spaces. These investments place a huge responsibility on the construction sector. Our ancient monuments were built with a vision that has withstood the test of time. Today, we must carry forward those values of responsibility, integrity, and quality in every project we undertake. 🔸 Responsibility to the Nation: The money funding these projects belongs to the people. We have a duty to ensure that every rupee is used to create long-lasting, impactful infrastructure. 🔸 Accountability for Public Funds: The billions being invested come from the hard-earned money of citizens. We owe it to them to deliver quality, transparency, and long-lasting value. 🔸 Integrity in Every Step: Shortcuts today lead to failures tomorrow. Upholding honesty and transparency in processes will ensure the infrastructure we build is safe, durable, and beneficial to society. 🔸 Leading with Ethics: As young professionals in the construction sector, it’s our duty to lead with honesty, ensuring every rupee spent is reflected in the value we create for future generations. 🔸 Commitment to Quality: Just like India’s ancient structures, modern projects must stand the test of time. Prioritizing quality in design, materials and manpower. 🔸 Legacy of Excellence: Just as India’s ancient monuments have endured for centuries, today’s infrastructure must be built to last, with a focus on sustainability, quality, and integrity. What we create today should not only meet the needs of the present but inspire generations to come.

India's 2nd cable-stayed, steel-deck bridge coming up near Howrah Station HOWRAH: A single-pylon cable-stay road over bridge (ROB) is being constructed to replace a nearly century-old bowstring bridge over the congested GT Road and across the rail tracks leading to Howrah Station. This will be only the second one in the country, after the Atal Setu or the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, to feature an orthotropic or solid steel plate deck. Designed by the Taiwanese company Weicon and being constructed by cable-stay bridge experts SP Singla Construction Pvt Ltd, the 607-metre, four-lane bridge costing Rs 174 crore will free up space below it. This will allow Eastern Railway to add more tracks and remove the bottleneck that currently causes delays for trains heading into Howrah Station. Passengers of long-distance trains arriving in Howrah during busy office hours are often made to wait for local trains carrying office commuters to pass. The new bridge is located just 200 metres from the station. The 60-metre Chandmari Bridge, constructed in 1933 and popularly called Bangal Babu Bridge, leads to constriction of the yard with only 12 tracks passing under it. Once the new bridge is commissioned sometime in Dec 2025, the clearance under the bridge span will increase to 134 metres and enable remodelling of the yard with the addition of more tracks," said Howrah divisional manager Sanjeev Kumar. Work on the bridge started in Dec 2019 but was held up due to Covid.

In an effort to ease the traffic congestion in Dhaka, it has been decided to deploy locally developed 'traffic signal lights' at 22 key intersections across the capital. This innovative technology has been developed by the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The installation will encompass the area from Shikkha Bhaban to Abdullahpur, passing through Farmgate and Mohakhali. The decision was announced during a meeting at BUET focused on Dhaka's traffic management, where Professor Moazzem Hossain from BUET’s Civil Engineering Department confirmed the initiative. Earlier, two transportation experts from BUET met with the interim government’s Chief Advisor, Dr Muhammad Yunus, to discuss short, medium and long-term solutions for traffic management in Dhaka. During the meeting, BUET showcased its locally developed traffic signal system, which will initially operate manually with red, green, and yellow lights, and later transition to an automated system. Professor Hossain stressed that foreign technologies had previously failed due to mismatches with Bangladesh's traffic management needs and inadequate backup systems. The locally developed system aims to address these issues by ensuring continuous backup support. These traffic lights are set to be installed at major intersections such as Shikkha Bhaban, Shahbagh, Farmgate, and Airport Road, and are anticipated to reduce Dhaka's traffic congestion by 80-90%, according to BUET’s estimation. Supreme Court of India - Illegal construction - Comprehensive and salutary directions to stop and eliminate the menace across the country - Unauthorised constructions, apart from posing a threat to the life of the occupants and the citizens living nearby, also have an effect on resources like electricity, ground water and access to roads, which are primarily designed to be made available in orderly development and authorized activities. Master plan or the zonal development cannot be just individual centric but also must be devised keeping in mind the larger interest of the public and the environment. The National Highway Authority Of IndiaÊ(Nhai) is targeting 5,000 Km of highway construction in the current financial year, which is 22% lower than last year. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways - India (MoRTH)'s highway development arm built 6,444 km of new highway last year, which was 20% greater than the 5,544 km that were built in 2022–2023. The NHAI has built 762.3 km of highways thus far. The total highway building for the months of April through May was 1,288 km, compared to 1,465 km in 2023–2024. Since the model code of conduct was in effect for the majority of the first quarter of the fiscal year, the slowdown in new project awarding and construction can be blamed for the targets' reduction.
