Stop looking for 10x developers and start looking for -10x developers! We often hear about the mythical 10x developer - someone who is ten times more productive than the average programmer. There are far more -10x developers out there. These are developers who not only struggle with productivity but can actively hinder the progress of their team. They are net negative asset to the team. As a hiring manager or team lead, your goal should be to avoid these -10x developers rather than searching for the elusive 10x developer. Look for red flags such as a lack of collaboration, poor communication skills, or an inability to take feedback constructively. Your team will be much better off by avoiding and eliminating these underperforming developers than finding one rockstar ninja 10x developer. Have you worked with a -10x developer?

A software developer should be one of your FIRST HIRES when starting a business. I have 8 full-time employees right now. Two of them are full-stack developers. They are driving so much value to my business that I'm hiring TWO MORE in the coming weeks. Most people think you should just use "off the shelf" technology. I’ve done that, and I’ve also built my own tech. And holy sh*t has my company become so much better since building our own technology. (All my full-time employees are offshore and make $6.41 / hour on average. They're incredibly affordable.)

I have come across developers, especially those in their early careers, who feel discouraged, and they say things like, "I want to implement this awesome tech at work, but my tech lead is pushing back or doesn't think it's needed." For instance, someone might want to introduce a complex and highly sophisticated password flow to make it very hard for adversaries to crack. However, it's important to understand that some technical decisions are the result of business agreements, not the other way around. If your business is fine with stateless JWTs with reasonable expiry times, there is no need to implement stateful tokens for revocation. This is what we call "acceptable risks." The company acknowledges these risks and is willing to maintain the current approach. It is not personal, just purely business decision. #career #softwareengineering
