Last-minute decision to attend the 13th Business & Human Rights Forum at the United Nations Office at Geneva, and I am grateful that I did. 1 1/2 days in, and I must say I expected more discussions around CSR, but the panel talks on due diligence and human rights violations—particularly among minority groups and in relation to child and forced labour—have been sobering. This realisation, paired with studying and working in socially and environmentally conscious and active organisations, has shown me just how much of a happy bubble I live in when it comes to business practices. I’m convinced that entrepreneurial activities will drive the most lasting change. And while I believe that culture and the arts provide intrinsic value, business focuses on money (which unfortunately does dictate our priorities as a society) and efficiency in ways that other stakeholders—such as governments, media, and NGOs—often cannot. Each of these groups has its role. However, hearing how many large corporations remain deeply entrenched in greenwashing and cultivate corruption at its roots makes collaboration among ambitious individuals that stand for positive impact more urgent than ever. This moves more and more into my mission statement of creating true narratives that are overlooked to create empathy even for stakeholders who like to ignore them—or at least make their harmful hypocrisy undeniably obvious.

We at Belva Advocates join the world in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day 2024 which is highlighting the critical importance of intellectual property (IP) in catalyzing the human innovation and creativity needed for achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Celebrated across the globe each April 26, nearly 150 events are planned in dozens of countries to mark this year’s World IP Day, which carries the theme: “IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity.” In 2015, countries around the world committed to the 17-objective SDGs, which are a roadmap to a better future that spans the range of human activity including climate change, poverty, education and others. However, progress is faltering ahead of the 2030 deadline for reaching the SDGs, with only 15% percent of the SDGs on track. “Throughout history, when faced with challenges, it has been human ingenuity, ideas and innovation that has allowed us to overcome and succeed. To put the SDGs back on track, we need to harness the power of intellectual property as a catalyst to unleash innovation and creativity in the service of the SDGs,” said WIPO Director General Daren Tang in a video address to mark World IP Day 2024. PLEB sat down with (Un)Sustainability Consultant & Provocateur Lavinia Muth to discuss business ethics within greenification, education & sustainability rhetoric. At PLEB, we believe there are conversations that need to be had to enable people to move forward and take a step outside of the bubbles they are living in. A quote from the article from Lavinia: "As an “(Un)Sustainability Consultant & Provocateur,” my use of the term “unsustainability” arises from a profound recognition of how mainstream sustainability efforts are deeply aligned with the same power structures that perpetuate harm, particularly the military-industrial complex, corporate-driven capitalism, and colonial legacies. These institutions thrive on extraction, exploitation, and inequality, which sustain the very systems they claim to reform. I use provocation in my work as a “sustainability soldier on deprogramming” to expose the inherent contradictions in these initiatives." We’re on 🚀 ITU Global Innovation Forum has brought together the digital innovation community to Malta. My favourite moments from this morning’s Ministerial Round Table and thoughts I’ll hold for inspiration in my work: 🎯H.E. Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani of Nigeria saw innovation is an opportunity to bridge the gap between citizens and government and rebuild trust, to create jobs and lift the economy. We need to increase investment in infrastructure but also in innovation, he said, as local innovation capabilities are critical infrastructure to re-energize economies. 🎯H.E. Ms Laurence NDONG of Gabon summarized it beautifully - without digitalizaiton, our economy will not advance to provide for better futures for our people. 🎯H.E. Ms Jocelle Batapa-Sigue of the Philippines spoke about DIWA - digital innovation for women advancement – enabling women to take new roles and jobs in technology. She also emphasized the importance of international collaboration in digital development – saying that no country should be an island and we all have a lot to learn from each other. 🎯H.E. Ms Marsha Caddle of Barbados shared her perspective that governments shouldn’t focus on technology to technology’s sake but create sandboxes to new ways to understand and solve development problems. And Barbados is doing it! 🎯H.E. Ms Agnė Vaiciukevičiūtė, PhD of Lithuania offered Lithuania’s experience in mainstreaming regulatory sandboxes to test drive digital innovation, recognizing that initial funding needs to be identified but calling on stakeholders to save no effort to set up experimental spaces. 🎯 On the same note, H.E. Ms Enkelejda Muçaj of Albania spoke to the importance of legal and regulatory frameworks that not only allow digital innovation but importantly, actively facilitate its inception and spread. 🎯H.E. Ms Nancy Caruana of Malta made a strong case for leveraging the country’s small size to capitalize on digital innovation and investment to lead the way in emerging technology development globally. I believe this insight can be truly valuable for Small Island Development States (SIDS). 🎯H.E. Mr Mondli Gungubele of South Africa said that digital innovation gives hope that there is a chance for emerging countries to get to the top. So inspiring. 🎯H.E. Ms Nthati Moorosi of Lesotho emphasized that digital public infrastructure can bridge the urban-rural digital divides, enhance public service delivery. Collaboration across sector is critical with this regard. Ms Moorosi also said she wishes we could have a global monitoring of where everyone is – good news, ITU has done it! Check comments below. If you missed the Forum, it’s not too late to enjoy it on your own time https://lnkd.in/esDa3qgn *the above are curated insights and not direct quotes. the post reflects my own views #DigitalInnovation #GIFMalta2024 #DigitalDevelopment #Collaboration #PublicSectorInnovation #SIDS
