Prior to the installation of the multiphase level measurement #EmulsionSENS on the #desalter, the customer had no idea what was really going on inside the vessel. After the measurement had successfully provided insights into the inside of the vessel for several weeks, it became apparent that the level should be lowered below the original operating range in order to improve the efficiency of the desalter. The reason for this was excessive iron carryover: the theory is that iron requires agitation to precipitate. However, some minerals float on the #emulsion layer causing less to precipitate. In this case, lowering the interface level in the vessel results in the turbulence of the mud washing system agitating the emulsion and thus supporting the precipitation of the iron. Thanks to Berthold's abilities and the design of #EmulsionSENS, it was possible to overcome the challenge and redesign the already installed system in a simple and uncomplicated way without having to replace everything. In horizontal separators, the build-up of sand and solids at the vessel's bottom poses a significant concern, potentially disrupting separator operations by occupying valuable vessel volume. Extensive efforts have been devoted to developing sand or sludge removal systems for separators over many years. However, no single "sand jet" system has emerged as unequivocally superior. Our proposed solution using SJ-Calc Tool provides Process Design of "H Type Conventional Jetting Headers" systems, which are installed along the vessel bottom, extending up to the sand retention baffle. These systems feature multiple jet headers positioned on either side of the centreline, ensuring comprehensive coverage. The headers are divided into several 'H' sections, each independently fed with jet water and drained, enabling precise monitoring and control of sand deposition and flushing, ideally at or above the critical Fluidization Factor. Equipped with an array of smaller arms fitted with fan-jet nozzles, the headers effectively fluidize and sweep the solids. Orifice size and fan angle selection are tailored to vessel dimensions. A central sand pan prevents sand accumulation on the centreline, averting clogging of the sand removal nozzles. Segmenting the sand area promotes efficient flushing, conserving jet water and preventing downstream dispersion of fluidized solids.

Sacrificial Anode? Sacrificial anodes are easily corroded materials deliberately installed in a pipe or tank to be sacrificed to corrosion, leaving the rest of the system relatively corrosion free. A sacrificial anode is also known as a galvanic anode.
