"Safety is everyone's responsibility in the mining industry. Stay vigilant, prioritize safety, and encourage others to do the same." I got to experience this during my student attachment at Nchanga Mine, one aspect of the experience that truly resonated with me was their unwavering focus on safety. Even if it's been over a year the sense of safety has stuck with me and I understood it's importance. It wasn't just a policy on paper; it was a constant presence. Daily safety talks kept everyone informed about potential hazards and proper procedures. More importantly, the mine ensured we were always equipped with the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). Whether it was wearing a hard hat in designated areas or using the appropriate respirator for specific tasks, safety was prioritized at every turn. This emphasis on safety has completely reshaped my perspective on the mining industry. It's no longer just about extracting resources; it's about safeguarding the well-being of every person involved. Witnessing this commitment firsthand has instilled in me the absolute importance of safety, not just in mining, but in any work environment. The picture is from early 2023, during my first days of going underground. An interesting experience it was.

Happy Miner Monday!!! 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫? Underground 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? Nevada Gold Mines Goldrush Underground 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? 17 years 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦? Hagatna, Guam. After we left there all over Nevada 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? I was working in west central Nevada and a friend called and asked if I would be interested in running a lube truck. I said yes, filled out an application, interviewed and got hired at Barrick Goldstrike Meikle Mine. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫? As an Underground Mobile Maintenance Supervisor I get to watch people succeed and set them up for it. I get to find out where techs want to be and help them reach their goals. I get to play the ever evolving chess game with operations of what do we need to do together to reach the targets set and needs of the mine while still maintaining the gear correctly and efficiently. The greatest part is watching the people I work with day in and day out is going home safe and progressing in their careers. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤? Anything outdoors usually. Play golf and softball, hunt, camp, ride UTV’s, travel, and hang out with family. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐞? I see things becoming more automated which is going to cause our maintenance groups to evolve and be more electronic than mechanical even more so than now. Operations will have to let the machines run with minor adjustments during operation. 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬, 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫? Be teachable. Hard working is wonderful but be teachable also. In interviews we hear “ I’m a hard worker” or “ I’m a fast learner” but rarely hear “ I am teachable” which is different from a fast learner. If you are interviewing with no qualifications that’s not a bad thing that means you are a blank slate that has no bad habits; if you have experience that would translate to mining exploit that as well but also understand companies do things differently than others and sometimes even site to site within the same company. Open Pit mining interface doing a pit expansion while at the same time mining the original faces comes with its own challenges. On the safety front, it requires operations to be proactive starting from planning. The planned mining faces (Polygons) must be well arranged, prioritized and they must have safety precautions instructions. In this intervention the best weapon to use is COMMUNICATION. Strong and effective communication tools must be established and enforced. The Shift Bosses for both the upper benches and lower benches must have a physical meeting so that there must be firm risk assessment actions taken. The Log Book must be a supporting tool (Note legal requirements of Log Books), which is written to affirm the observations done by both Shift Bosses. In most cases operations at the bottom benches are at the receiving end and very much exposed to hazardous incidents. a simple task like site preparation at the top benches has a high likelihood of dropping boulders to the lower benches. Activities like drilling, blast holes charging and dozing are at times done close to the high wall and if communication is lacking, boulders from upper benches will land onto equipment or personnel at the lower benches. Pit interface requires properly crafted procedures in order to prevent unwanted events. Parking of equipment during blasting times sometimes puts them in harms way resulting in property damages. Blast timing must also be done such that it reduces fly-rock throw towards the bottom faces, but the material along the higher free face will roll down. The spillage from the high faces has a tendency is closing access roads. The share for today is: Avoid accidents by ensuring that all personnel have been briefed, Communication is done regularly, Observe and take corrective action, be proactive rather than reactive.
