Well we think we all need coffee with added warmth this weekend
So it's apt that today is National Irish Coffee day
Here's our advice on making the perfect Irish Coffee
First warm your glass - add hot water to your coffee glass while you prepare
Lightly whisk some fresh whipping cream, you want it to thicken slightly to the texture of creme fraiche. Set aside
Prepare 200ml of strong coffee, Black Velvet is perfect here. We use 100ml espresso then add 100ml just boiled water. However 200ml of coffee from cafetiere or moka pot will work equally well, just make sure coffee is hot.
Discard the hot water from your glass and add the coffee
Now extra special top tip, whether you like sweet coffee or not, add 2 heaped teaspoons of demerara sugar to the coffee and stir until completely dissolved. It's important you don't see or feel any granules of sugar, make sure its properly melted away.
Next add 1 measure (35ml) of whiskey, Paddy's is traditional or Jameson will do fine, you want a sweet, smooth whiskey.
Stir again and then the tricky part. Hover the back of spoon just millimeters over the coffee and begin to slowly pour the cream over the back of the spoon, so it suspends on top
Serve immediately and enjoy!
(you can source non alcoholic whiskey to use and in any case please drink responsibly)
