In animal welfare, there's no feeling more helpless than not being able to help a pet parent who desperately wants to keep their pet. That's why Dogs Matter, a program of Best Friends Network Partner Dallas Pets Alive!, exists: more specifically, they enable pet parents who need inpatient treatment for alcohol or substance abuse disorder to take that necessary step by giving them a temporary safe place for their pets.
Stephen Knight, Dogs Matter Founder & Executive Director, is one of the 2024 five CNN Heroes. If he wins the Hero of the Year, he could win more than $100,000 to continue his work. You can vote here up to 10 times daily through December 3: https://lnkd.in/gVBf-u_X

This makes me so happy! I shared this program with a friend in TX who has been in rehab and is now helping others with their recovery. Weeks later, he had the opportunity to meet Stephen. This is such an incredible program and I am glad to see him receiving recognition for the work being done to help others and their pets. Can't wait to watch CNN Heroes. Good luck Stephen 🐾
Stephen is incredibly down-to-earth, and I’m so honored to work alongside him! Please cast your vote for him so Dogs Matter can win $100,000 to keep saving lives—both humans and their beloved pets!
Incredible work, Stephen! It’s heartwarming to see such compassion for both pets and their parents. Keeping families together during tough times is crucial. I’m thrilled to support the Dogs Matter initiative. Let’s help spread the word! 🐾💙
No One Should Have to Choose Between Safety and Their Pets 🐾
For individuals experiencing domestic violence, fear of leaving pets behind can prevent them from seeking safety. That’s why, in 2011, the Animal Welfare Institute established the Safe Havens for Pets Project—a national directory of sheltering services that help survivors place their pets out of harm’s way while they find safety themselves.
There are now approximately 1,200 facilities listed in the Safe Havens directory. Sheltering services vary by location—some use foster care networks, while others partner with veterinarians or humane societies. Some domestic violence shelters even house pets alongside survivors.

Something we can’t all agree on: pineapple on pizza.
Something we can all agree on: shelters are over capacity and lowering intake will help.
We need to open up space for animals that truly need the care, and one way to do that is through proper identification and registration for pets that DO have homes and end up lost and at the shelter. DocuPet’s mission is to make the shelter the last resort, not the first stop for lost pets. DocuPet’s registration solution, paired with their free HomeSafe lost pet service works to do just that while taking on the administrative duties to free up time and resources for animal welfare organizations.

Tomorrow 9/10 at 5pm CT - Suicide Prevention for Animal Welfare Staff Discussion
In recognition of Suicide Prevention Month, I have the honor of being invited to be a co-panelist - alongside the trail blazing and talented social worker at Austin PetsAlive, Alexis Telfair-Garcia, LMSW - to discuss supporting animal shelter staff and animal welfare professionals in the incredibly difficult work they do each day.
Animal rescue staff have high chronic stress levels and suicide risk, comparable to those of first responders. They face big picture system stressors - shelters over capacity, lack of animal-inclusive housing and affordable veterinary care driving surrenders- and day-to-day work life stressors; these are interconnected and both can be worsened by how we think and react to them.
Here’s a quote often cited by my favorite compassion resilience expert Jessica Dolce, “we can’t stop the waves in the moment, but we can learn to surf”. We must work on what is causing the stormy waves in animal welfare, and in the meantime, use surfing strategies to stay afloat and stay as well as possible. The good news is, work toward improvement is happening on both fronts!!!
If you are able, please join Alexis and me on Sept. 10 at 5pm CT to discuss some of the evidence-based “surfing” strategies that can protect us from toxic stress that leads to mental and physical health issues and increased suicide risk. See post below for more info. Huge thanks to Human Animal Support Services for hosting and organizing this incredibly important conversation.
Please share with anyone who may be interested!

What can social work teach the animal welfare industry about supporting shelter staff and volunteers?
Animal welfare professionals face crises, traumatic experiences, and compassion fatigue daily. With staff shortages and maximum shelter capacity nationwide, many work unprecedented hours in often inhuman conditions leading to a significant risk to mental health. As such, animal rescue workers have the highest rate of death by self-harm among American workers–a rate only shared by firefighters and police officers.
With September being suicide prevention month, Dr. Janet Hoy-Gerlach, Director of Veterinary Social Work at Open Door Veterinary Collective, and Alexis Telfair-Garcia, Social Worker for Austin Pets Alive!, will discuss how to support shelter staff personally and professionally through best practices in social work and trauma-informed care.

According to research animal cruelty often co-occurs with other violent crimes, such as domestic violence and assault.
I recently wrote to Congressman Jeff Duncan regarding the bipartisan Child and Animal Abuse Detection and Reporting Act (H.R. 8733). This bill would allow states to track the connection between child and animal abuse in reports to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), promoting cooperation between humane law enforcement and social services.
The bill is currently under review by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. While my congressman doesn’t serve on the committee, it’s a great time to let your representatives know where you stand, particularly if one of yours does! Supporting this bill is a great way to protect vulnerable populations. You can take action here with help from the Animal Welfare Institute: https://lnkd.in/dwhvQGrz
Let’s advocate for stronger protections for both children and animals!
