Running from November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10th (Human Rights Day), these 16 days are a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to advocate for justice, equality, and safety for everyone. Day 13 of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence: #NoExcuse 🔴 Fundamental rights should not depend on geography. In 2022, only 14% of all women and girls worldwide—approximately 557 million—lived in countries with robust legal protections guaranteeing their fundamental human rights. This leaves the vast majority of women and girls without adequate legal safeguards, exposing them to violence, discrimination, and systemic inequality. Strong legal frameworks are essential for advancing gender equality and protecting women’s rights. Yet, laws alone are not enough; they must be enforced, and justice systems must work for all. To achieve true equality, we must close the gap between policy and practice, ensuring every woman and girl, no matter where she lives, can access her fundamental human rights. 📢 Join Us in Paving the Way for an Equality-Centred EU Policy Cycle! 🌍 The EU was built on the principles of equality and non-discrimination, yet many still face discrimination. As the 2024-2029 cycle approaches, we urge EU leaders to make equality and non-discrimination central to their agenda. Key achievements of the past five years include initiatives like the Directive on Violence Against Women, Gender Equality and LGBTIQ Equality Strategies, and the Anti-Racism Action Plan. At this critical moment, we call on EU leadership to continue this progress by strengthening the Union of Equality agenda, ensuring robust funding for civil society organizations, maintaining the Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, and establishing a Directorate-General for Equality and Fundamental Rights. As 133 civil society organizations united, we urge EU leaders to involve those most affected by discrimination in shaping policies.
