🚧 🛠️ Australia’s construction industry is under serious pressure to build 1.2 million new homes and $230 billion of infrastructure over the next five years – and the huge shortage in workers isn’t helping the issue. The sector is struggling to attract and retain female workers and long working hours are posing significant risks to people’s physical and mental health. What can fix these problems? One proposed solution is a mandatory five-day working week which on face-value, might seem like an obvious fix. But as Martin Loosemore and Suhair Alkilani from University of Technology Sydney write, without careful design, such a proposal could have unintended consequences. Their research surveyed 1,475 construction workers to investigate the potential impacts of a shorter work week on work-life balance. Unsurprisingly, there was strong support for a shorter week. However, few people were willing or able to take a pay cut, work longer hours or lift their productivity during the week to make up The consequences of moving the industry to a five-day week could also lead to delays in completing projects and increased costs. 💬 Read their findings here: https://shorturl.at/scV5E

The recent article “Would a Mandatory Five-Day Working Week Solve Construction’s Work-Life Balance Woes?” raises an important point—but it misses a big part of the picture. Long commutes to distant sites are piling on stress for workers. Modern Methods of Construction (MMC)—like modular and pre-built systems—offer a real solution. Fewer hours on-site. Less travel. More efficiency. It’s not just about rethinking work weeks. It’s about rethinking how we build—for better balance and a smarter way to tackle the housing crisis. #modernmethodsofconstruction #housingcrisis #constructioninnovation #worklifebalance

Ministers Simon Coveney and Roderic O'Gorman have today brought the right to request remote working arrangements for all employees and the right to request flexible working arrangements for parents and carers into operation. The Work Life Balance and Miscellaneous Provisions Act was enacted on 4 April 2023 and represents a significant advance in workplace entitlements for employees. Provisions for the right to request remote working for all employees and the right to request flexible working arrangements for parents and carers are available under the Act and these rights are now in operation. The right to request flexible working for parents and carers transposes Article 9 of the EU Work Life Balance Directive. Ireland has now fully transposed the Directive. With all the talk about the benefits of adopting a 4 day work week, it appears we've forgotten a sector... 🔨 Working practices in the construction industry have been labelled a relic of a bygone era – with 64% of employees working more than 50 hours per week. As the daughter and sister of builders, I've seen the physical and mental toll this can have first hand. This article explores a proposal to mandate a five-day week across the sector to attract (particularly female) talent and alleviate other pressures.

#Construction workers typically work six days a week, but research tracking five infrastructure projects trialling a five-day work week shows flexibility is key to improving worker wellbeing, with minimal perceived impact on productivity. The research, led by RMIT in collaboration with Culture in Construction, surveyed workers across three pilot projects and found 84% of workers on an annual salary and 61% of workers on an hourly wage were in support of a five-day work week compared to a six-day work week. Project lead and Distinguished Professor Helen Lingard said having more time for life outside work was the most common reason workers supported the five-day work week. “We found the majority of workers, irrespective of gender, preferred a five-day work week because it allowed them to spend more time with their family, see their friends or play sports,” she said. While Saturdays were perceived to be a less productive work day, chief investigator and Professor Michelle Turner said some of the younger workers who are establishing their careers and do not have family responsibilities liked having the option to work on a Saturday. “A flexible workplace can enable families to share the caring load better, which will help to attract women to the industry and also men who want to participate more actively in family life,” she said.
