📢 Modelling Process Monitoring Data in Laser Powder Bed Fusion: A Pragmatic Route to Additive Manufacturing Quality Assurance' Quality assurance in laser powder bed fusion and metal additive manufacturing is a significant challenge due to large and cumbersome datasets. This paper proposes a pragmatic approach to model process monitoring data using a straightforward algorithm. By fitting the algorithm to experimental data, key process parameters are better understood, with predictability improving at higher energy levels, achieving an R² of up to 0.8. Key takeaways: - Two behavioural regimes identified: low sensitivity at energy densities below 0.2 J/mm and more predictable outcomes above this threshold. - The approach lays the groundwork for a generalized predictive tool to address quality assurance challenges. - Future improvements will focus on refining methodologies to handle noise, geometry, and systematic behaviours. This study opens up new pathways for intelligent build planning and individual build validation by pre-emptively assessing challenging features and strategies. It’s an exciting development in the pursuit of enhanced reliability and accuracy in additive manufacturing! #LaserPowderBedFusion #AdditiveManufacturing #QualityAssurance #ProcessMonitoring #ManufacturingInnovation Luke Carter
Great way to start a Monday - NEW PAPER ALERT Modelling Process Monitoring Data in Laser Powder Bed Fusion: A Pragmatic Route to #AdditiveManufacturing Quality Assurance Super proud of this work, led by Luke Carter that is pushing the boundaries of process monitoring for #LPBF Imagine a world where pre-build you can predict your process monitoring data such that you may fix any issues before even starting the print? Thereby saving time, materials and ultimately £££. Happy to be able to share our latest research which combines commercial #AdditiveManufacturing process monitoring and a rapid numerical model. One of the strengths of AM is to be able to print bespoke parts and jobs, but without an existing dataset for each specific job, the ability to use process monitoring data for QA purposes is limited. Rapid modelling of this data from input scan path and parameters allows us to spot unexpected deviations during processing and build confidence in the quality of the part.... ... and in the future aim to use this as the foundation for further benefits such as advanced build preparation for challenging geometries and even local customisation of material properties

Check out how to print 8x fast with good surface finish.
New Dyndrite Case Study 🚨 There is a well-known adage in manufacturing, namely, “You can have Speed, Quality or Price, Pick any Two.” - In additive some say, "Pick one!" This case study shows how engineered material, fit for purpose hardware, and modern software, come together to change all this. Now you can have metal AM parts at speed, at a low price, without sacrificing surface quality. If you are an LPBF materials scientist, process engineer, quality engineer, or application engineer, this case study is for you: Download the free case study today! https://lnkd.in/ed5JNtS3 Thank you: Evan Butler-Jones, Yves Hagedorn, Equispheres Inc., Aconity3D GmbH
