The PM Spirits team had the privilege to chat with spirits expert Alexandre Vingtier who schooled us on Calvados. Amongst many other things, his explanation of how "traveling distillers"/"ambulant distillers" hold a special place in the Normandie region was quite eye opening: Unlike Cognac - and to some degree Armagnac - which are primarily commercial products, Calvados holds a more dual identity: it is both a commercial product and a personal, family-crafted spirit, making it not just a product but a part of daily life and tradition in Normandy where Calvados is made. In the region, ambulant distillers are still a thing: currently, there are 36 active such traveling distillers, to compare with 3 in Armagnac (and none in Cognac, at least to my own knowledge). That's mostly because while Normandy hosts around 400 registered commercial producers within the Calvados appellation, there are approximately three times as many farms producing cider spirits for personal use. These smaller operations may not be officially recognized within the appellation, but they contribute significantly to the local culture. The spirits produced on these farms are non-commercial endeavors. Although technically not "Calvados", these distillates are cherished locally and known as "cider spirits" or affectionately termed "calva", highlighting the stuff's everyday presence, often enjoyed at the end of a meal or with coffee and embodying a sense of local heritage and community.

[News] On April 3rd, our Secretary General Minah Oh, welcomed representatives from three renowned Andalusian wineries: Bodegas Altanza, Bodegas Barbadillo and Bodegas del Pino, as a delegation of Andalucía TRADE (the Andalusian Business Agency for Economic Transformation and Development). The Chamber has arranged meetings for these wineries, marking the beginning of an active trade mission to explore the dynamic Korean market. In an effort to foster meaningful connections and open new business opportunities, we are committed to expanding the presence of Andalusian wine in the international market. With Andalucia Trade's support and the invited wineries' valuable participation, we are confident that this trade mission will be a resounding success. We are excited about the potential of the South Korean market and believe that the quality and appeal of Andalusian wines will win the hearts of consumers. Thanks to the meetings scheduled for the wineries, partnerships can be forged that enrich both the Spanish and Korean markets. #ESCCK #AndaluciaTrade #WineAndaluz #ExploringMarkets #TradeConnections

Did you know that in the French wine industry, one producer would probably NEVER help pour another French producer's wines? The South African wine industry camaraderie has enabled their industry to grow leaps and bounds. The slew of reports from different publications such as Business Times have highlighted the challenging times F&B face globally. South African wines have defied trends and are powering through these difficult times. Sharing and costing have often been cited as key factors among producers. I was honored to be part of a fireside chat that highlighted the growth in South African wines. As of 2023, approximately 39% of wines are exported, with the UK and Europe traditionally being major markets. However, the industry is witnessing a shift towards Asia, particularly with Japan emerging as a key player. Now is the perfect time to explore these exceptional wines. Not only are they a fraction of the cost of Old World wines, but they also offer comparable or superior quality. Cheers to the evolving landscape of the wine industry! 🍷🌍 #WineIndustry #SouthAfricanWines #GlobalMarketTrends Cape Winemakers Guild Bevan Newton Johnson Savage Wines 67 Pall Mall Singapore
