This Week at Beyond Blindness! Our kiddos got into the holiday spirit with festive arts and crafts that brought joy and creativity to every corner. In Learning Link, families came together to make adorable Christmas tree crafts, creating memories to last a lifetime. The holiday fun didn’t stop there—our little ones bundled up and enjoyed some outdoor adventures with their friends, embracing the winter season with smiles and laughter. Meanwhile, in our Social Emotional Program, we celebrated Community Heroes, teaching the kiddos about those who keep our communities safe and strong, while also giving them the chance to dress up as their favorite heroes. Stay tuned for more seasonal fun and heartwarming activities next week! It may be the spooky season, but participating in trick-or-treating, dressing up, or enjoying some Halloween activities doesn't have to be scary. You can help make Halloween accessible for everyone by: - offering treat and non-treat options for those who can't have candy - setting up a trick-or-treat station at the end of your driveway for easy access - keeping flashing lights, loud noises and jumpscares to a minimum for a sensory-friendly experience - being patient and understanding towards people using a communication device or needing extra time/support when trick-or-treating - and visiting our website below to see the kinds of AT that can help make Halloween activities easier for people with disabilities or older Aussies.

The Hidden Risks of Sharing Nativity Photos Online It’s that magical time of year when schools are putting on Christmas nativities. As parents, we’re bursting with pride as we watch our little ones shine on stage. But as tempting as it might be to snap a photo and share it online, it’s crucial to pause and consider the wider impact. Posting photos of your child’s nativity might seem harmless, but there are important reasons to think twice: 🎭 Other children’s safety: Not all children are in the position to have their images shared publicly. Some may be in foster care, others may have families with safety concerns, such as escaping domestic violence. A seemingly innocent post could unintentionally compromise their privacy or safety. 🌐 Lack of control: Once a photo is online, it’s nearly impossible to control where it ends up. Even with privacy settings, there’s no guarantee your post won’t be shared further. 💡 School guidelines: Many schools now ask parents to avoid taking or sharing photos to protect all children. Respecting this request ensures every child can participate without concern. Instead of posting photos of the performance, consider sharing: • A picture of your child in their costume at home. • A creative shot of their handmade props or programs. • A caption about how proud you are of their role, without visuals of other children. Let’s keep the magic of nativities alive while ensuring every child is safe and respected. What are your thoughts on this? Let’s start a conversation about balancing pride with privacy. #OnlineSafety #ParentingTips #NativitySeason

Halloween Safety tips - Courtesy of Safe Kids Worldwide https://buff.ly/3jgotke 🧟♂️Walk Safely🧟♀️ Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars. Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups. 👯♂️Costumes for a Safe Halloween👯♀️ Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. 🚘Drive Extra Safely on Halloween🚗 Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. Get rid of any distractions - like your phone - in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Be especially alert for kids during those hours. https://buff.ly/3jgotke

Forget Halloween, what's truly scary is Winter Trail Lights start soon 😱 But seriously, would an Accessibility Video of the route be of value to you? The video was created in my very early days of producing them, when the camera I used was pretty basic and to be honest, so was my skills of filming and editing. If you watch this, followed by my most recent video, you'll see a huge difference between them and I appreciate this to be honest, as it shows how far I've come in 18mths. However, the main reason for scaring you with a reminder of how close this particular time of year is, I refuse to say the word just yet, because I'm looking for your input on how much use it would be to you, if you were looking to visit one? Ideally I'd like to show the suppliers/providers of such attractions, there is a need for such a video and here is what your potential customers are saying. I've never seen places promote winter trail light attractions to people with disabilities or even have representation within marketing material used, which I find very frustrating. Therefore, this year, I'm hoping to create a couple as examples and to help the venues involved, share relevant information to the disabled community and hopefully more people with disabilities can benefit from them. What are your thoughts on all of this and would such videos be of value to you? #Accessibility #AccessibilityVideo #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityAdvocate

🎃 How to Create an Inclusive Halloween for Everyone! 🎃 Halloween is a magical night filled with costumes, candy, and excitement! But for some kids with disabilities, the holiday can come with a few extra challenges. Here are some ways to make sure every trick-or-treater feels included, welcome, and ready for the fun: 1. Take It Downstairs: If you have steps, consider setting up at the bottom of your stairs or in the driveway. This makes it easier for children who use wheelchairs or have mobility challenges to join in on the Halloween fun without barriers. 2. Offer Non-Edible Treats: Some kids can’t enjoy candy due to allergies, dietary needs, or sensory issues. A separate stash of non-edible treats like bubbles, stickers, or small toys is a great option! Look out for homes participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project—a teal pumpkin on your doorstep signals that you offer non-food treats and trinkets that delight all trick-or-treaters. 3. Skip the "Trick-or-Treat" Requirement: Not every child can or wants to say "trick-or-treat." Some kids are non-verbal or may need extra time to respond. Instead, share a friendly greeting or compliment their costume! 4. Be Patient: Halloween can be a busy night, but please be patient. Some kids might need a little extra time to make their selections or navigate the path to your door. 5. Focus on Fun, Not Abilities: Instead of drawing attention to any challenges, try commenting on their costume, the treats they’re collecting, or their Halloween spirit. This small change helps keep the night magical for every child. Let’s make this Halloween special and inclusive for all kids! Every child deserves to enjoy a safe, spooky, and accessible Halloween night. 🕸️ 🍬 ID: The graphic has a blue background and the text "HOW TO HAVE AN INCLUSIVE HALLOWEEN" in white letters. Two white ghosts are holding hands in the center of the image. One ghost has a pink bow in its hair and pink shoes. The other ghost has orange shoes. A jack-o-lantern balloon is floating in the air near the ghosts. There are also black bats and spiders on the background. The Center for Independent Living logo is in the bottom right corner. #InclusiveHalloween #InclusionMatters #DisabilityAwareness
