Today, World Braille Day, we honor Louis Braille's incredible legacy! His invention has transformed the lives of millions of individuals who are blind or visually impaired, empowering them to read, write, and thrive independently. At Beyond Blindness, we are dedicated to promoting a world of inclusion and accessibility. We do this through our services, by creating inclusive learning environments, and by ensuring our staff is well-trained to support the unique needs of the children we serve. With tools like Braille, we can help instill independence and confidence in both the children and their families. Let us celebrate the invention of this powerful tool of independence and continue striving for a more accessible future for everyone! Conversations with children have a great deal of power. In fact, even simple conversations are an important dimension of our human superpower. The science is unambiguous. Children who have a lot of quality conversations during their childhoods tend to have important advantages over children who do not. These advantages range from language and communication skills to a secure sense of belonging and confidence. But not all conversations are equal… In this episode, we’ll speak with Harvard Professor, Dr. Rebecca Rolland, about her book The Art of Talking with Children: The Simple Keys to Nurturing Kindness, Creativity, and Confidence in Kids. Her book offers practical, research-based advice about how people who converse with children can maximize the incredible potential of the simple conversation. It’s also vital advice for those of us who want to one day unleash our superpower for the sake of all our children. Here are links to where you can buy Dr. Rebecca Rolland’s book: https://lnkd.in/eTQFZP4y https://lnkd.in/eG4QgrAR

A systemic analysis of racism helps us see that the Civil Rights Act and other civil-rights-era laws, while important, did not end the way racism works in our society. To understand the dynamics that sustain and perpetuate racism, we need to analyze it systemically. This is a clip of my conversation with Anaridis Rodriguez on Generation Rising. In celebrating the Week of the Young Child (WOYC), the Black Women Educators (BWE) of NC will acknowledge different member's work as it coincides with the premise and principles of WOYC from a different lens aligned to children, families, educators, and community stakeholders. It is important to expand the horizon of what these beautiful, powerful, bold, innovative, Black women are doing in field of education. Let's start today with the video titled, Selecting Culturally and Linguistically Children's Books by Dr. Brenda K. Williamson. It is important to select children's books which are diverse and inclusive ensuring illustrations are not reflective of stereotypes. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's concept of mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors is discussed with slides displaying various diverse books for children birth to age eight. In addition, two tools are referenced to selecting books highlighting diversity of characters, vocabulary, values (e.g., equity, fairness, inclusion), avoiding societal stereotypes and more. Knowledge Is powerful towards being an agent of social justice change through ACTION. Increased knowledge brings increased responsibility. #drbkw #bweofnc #woyc2024 https://lnkd.in/eMiua6DR

This phrase can be punctuated in two very different ways, leading to distinct interpretations: “A woman, without her man, is nothing.” (Suggesting a woman’s identity is tied to her man) “A woman: without her, man is nothing.” (Emphasizing the importance of a woman) Both versions highlight how punctuation can dramatically change meaning, making it a great exercise for students to discuss the implications of each interpretation!
