Renewcell just filed for bankruptcy! Why did this darling of the fashion world fail? Renewcell, was the world's first industrial-scale fabric recycler that built a factory that should have been producing 60k tons of pulp a year. When they started, they claimed more than 50 brands lined up to make clothes from the pulp. As late as Q3 2023, it was running at half capacity, and only managed to sell a fraction of that to a handful of customers. 1) Was it the technology? The short answer is no. The long answer is that they didn't manage to iron out all the issues that you typically have with using waste materials - impurities, different kinds of fabrics that are mixed etc. This meant they were still tweaking things as they operated which meant higher costs, lower production volumes and longer delivery cycles, all resulting in higher cost than anticipated. This would have worked itself out over time. 2) Was it timing? The short answer is yes. The apparel industry has taking a beating in the last months and this is expected to continue into 2024. Few brands are open to experimentation right now. Its a bit of a chicken and egg where these technologies only become viable at scale, but demand follows viability. Add to that a pessimistic market, and you have the recipe for failure. While unfortunate for Renewcell, I am waiting for the news that someone buys the assets and takes this forward.

Sad news on the sustainability front. But it's not one company that's going to save the industry. Renewcell is a great example of how quickly a startup can go from darling to done. And a good reminder that you never know what's going on behind the scenes of that company you envy. If you are struggling to build your own impact focused solution and up late worrying how you'll pay the bills, you are not alone. There simply aren't enough brands willing to pay for these solutions despite their bold claims that they want to improve. Maybe this shows we need better positive incentives for brands to proactively partner with impact oriented companies/orgs, or for consumers to give it a try? At the end of the day, my thoughts always circled back to something that truly challenged me. Can we make sustainability profitable? Can we make solutions that actually make/save money for brands so they line up to grab them? As someone who's been in this space a long time, I believe we do need to continue to fixate on this missing link if we ever hope to truly make strides.
