Varane Decides to Hang Up the Boots ⚽ Varane has announced his retirement from professional football on social media, effective immediately due to a recent injury. He will, however, maintain a non-playing role at Como. Let's take a moment to appreciate his legendary 22-trophy cabinet: FIFA World Cup x1 UEFA Nations League x1 Champions League x4 FIFA Club World Cup x4 UEFA Super Cup x3 La Liga x3 Spanish Super Cup x3 Copa Del Rey x1 FA Cup x1 Carabao Cup x1 Fair to say Raphael Varane bowed out as one of the most decorated CBs of all time. However, is he an overrated or an underrated baller? 🤔 Despite starting his professional career at such a young age, I believe Varane was underrated at Real Madrid and a crucial asset at his best. However, injuries ultimately prevented him from cementing his status as a true legend of the game. 📊 According to Transfermarkt GmbH & Co. KG, Varane missed a total of 800 days (160 games). That’s up to 2 years and 2 months of injuries! 🤯 His battle with injuries significantly impacted his career, leading to missed opportunities during crucial seasons. In my opinion, Varane was a phenomenal defender at his peak. Unfortunately, longevity is essential when discussing being "one of the greats," and he didn't fit that criteria. Injuries stopped him from becoming the player we all wanted to see. Do you agree with my opinion? Or do you believe he bowed out of the game as an underrated CB? #BeyondThe90 #FootballOpinions #SoccerTalk #FootballDebate #RealMadrid #ManchesterUnited #RaphaelVarane #JoinTheConversation

Have football fans seen the last of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal shirt? The team's departure from Euro 2024 at the quarter-final stage has had many wondering if Ronaldo would hang up his boots at the international stage after the tournament. Ronaldo didn't look at his best the entire tournament and even failed to register a single goal or assist before the team's exit. However, a report has claimed that Ronaldo isn't willing to quit international football just yet. In fact, he is determined to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and bring the trophy home. Ronaldo had an insipid Euro 2024 campaign that saw him contribute little to the team's goals. Portugal reached the quarter-finals of the tournament, thanks to their goalkeeper Diogo Costa's heroics in the penalty shootout after Ronaldo missed a penalty, putting the team in danger of elimination. Even the quarter-final clash against France saw the team struggle in front of goal, forcing the match into another penalty shootout where Les Bleus emerged triumphant. But, as per a report in Relevo, it isn't all over for Ronaldo just yet. As per the publication, Ronaldo has his eyes on the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In fact, he also wants to become the first player in history to appear and score in six editions of the flagship competition. What is the False 9 position in football?🤔⚽ The False 9 is a centre-forward who drops deep, often in between the lines, to receive the ball and link up play. The purpose of the false 9 is simple: to draw a centre back out of position, opening up space for others to exploit. If a midfielder drops back to track the false 9, there's an overload they have to contend with in the centre of the park. Austrian forward Matthias Sindelar was known to play in the false 9 position in the 1930s, while Nandor Hidegkuti did the same with the great Hungarian side of the 1950s. However, the term "False 9" was popularised in modern football by Pep Guardiola, who used Lionel Messi in that position at Barcelona. Messi dropping deep created triangles in midfield, and Barca's short passing and rapid movement meant this was highly effective. A false 9 must be extremely good on the ball and with their passing and link-up play. Examples of a false 9 in recent times, apart from Messi, are Cesc Fabregas at Euro 2012 and Roberto Firmino under Jurgen Klopp. Who is your favourite False 9? Let us know in the comments!💬 📺Watch the video: https://lnkd.in/gaqsWFqr #football #soccer #false9

The Latest Men's World Football Rankings - July 2024 1 Argentina 2 France 3 Spain 4 England 5 Brazil 6 Belgium 7 Netherlands 8 Portugal 9 Colombia 10 Italy Full list - https://lnkd.in/ehJJMwFD After long period testing and analysing the best way to calculate the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, a new model took effect in August 2018 after approval by the FIFA Council. This new version developed by FIFA was named "SUM" as it relies on adding/subtracting points won or lost for a game to/from the previous point totals rather than averaging game points over a given time period as in the previous version of the World Ranking. The points which are added or subtracted are partially determined by the relative strength of the two opponents, including the logical expectation that teams higher in the ranking should fare better against teams lower in the ranking. More details about the formula used in the algorithm, weightings of matches and other characteristics can be found in the link in the comments. So how did your country do?
