Today we honor a pivotal moment in our history—Brown v. Board of Education. This landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, stating that "separate but equal" has no place in education. This case reshaped the fabric of American society and moved us one step closer towards true equality. The journey doesn't end there. To understand the full context of our shared past and to continue pushing for an inclusive future, it’s essential to engage with all facets of history. On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize the importance of accurately representing Native American history and culture in our education systems. According to the Reclaiming Native Truth (RNT) Project by IllumiNative Org, nearly half of Americans feel their education about Native Americans was inaccurate. Additionally, 72% believe significant changes are needed in school curricula to better reflect Native American history and culture. Parents and teachers agree that current educational materials are often misleading. Many educators rank Native American history as one of the least covered and least accurate subjects. It's disheartening that parents feel they must teach their children the "real history" of their people at home due to inadequacies in school teachings. To help change this narrative, we encourage educators to explore lesson plans on IllumiNative's website: https://lnkd.in/g_Pcx5Hy. These resources support educators in providing a more accurate, inclusive understanding of Native American histories and cultures. Let’s educate ourselves and advocate for meaningful changes in our curricula, ensuring that Indigenous voices are heard and celebrated in our schools. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #ReclaimingNativeTruth #EducationEquity #ChangeTheNarrative #IllumiNative #PEDC #DiversityAndInclusion

Curriculum matters! This is why there's been such an increase in attention to banning books and restricting what students can and cannot learn. I grew up learning the 10 Commandments - AT HOME! This judge's ruling is a win - for now. Rest assured, the group wanting the 10 Commandments in schools at scale will carefully review the ruling, regroup, and bring their case back. Here's what you can expect 1. more "groups" will pose ways to bring their version of Christianity into public schools; 2. increased banning of books, especially those focused on America's troubled history, the voices of Black people, immigration, and other marginalized groups; 3. increased restrictions on curricular content; 4. increased calls for "parents' rights," which will NOT include all parents; 5. increased calls for exclusionary discipline practices wrapped under the guise of school safety. In a world where curriculum has been, is, and will be under attack, having knowledge about how bias shapes educational content is critical. For the past few weeks, I've been sharing 7 forms of bias in educational materials. This week, it's all about imbalance and selectivity. Logical next step after disbanding Affirmative Action. If admissions departments are to select students based solely on, “merit,” legacy admissions must be banned as well. Stat(s) of the Day: National Statistics reveal that more students get in on legacy admissions at elite colleges than they did on Affirmative Action. And, ironically, the #1 beneficiaries of both Legacy Admissions AND Affirmative Action are from the same group. Teaching Our Kids the Full Story: Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous Communities When we talk about educating our children on Indigenous issues, it’s not just about teaching reconciliation. It’s about teaching the truth—the whole truth—including the pain and injustice that has led us to the need for reconciliation. Why Teach the Truth? To truly honor Indigenous communities, we must ensure that the next generation understands not only the importance of reconciliation but also the historical truths that precede it. The stories of resilience, strength, and survival in the face of immense suffering are essential for fostering empathy and understanding. 🎓 The Pain Behind Reconciliation: Reconciliation is about healing, but healing can only begin when we acknowledge the wounds. The painful history of residential schools, loss of culture, and systemic discrimination are not just chapters in a history book; they are the lived experiences of many and the foundation for much of the injustice Indigenous communities still face today. Why This Matters for Our Children: When we teach children about the full scope of Indigenous history, including the painful truths, we encourage them to become empathetic and informed citizens. We help them understand that justice requires acknowledging the past and working towards a more equitable future for all. How Can We Do This? Integrate Indigenous voices and perspectives into our curriculum. Discuss the history of colonization and its ongoing impact on Indigenous communities. Encourage open and honest conversations about historical and present-day injustices. Let’s commit to teaching not just reconciliation but the truth that underlies it. By doing so, we empower our children to become advocates for genuine change and a future built on both understanding and justice. 🗣️ How do you think we can better teach these truths to the next generation? Share your ideas! #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousHistory #Education #Diversity #Inclusion #Justice #Empathy #FutureGenerations #Leadership

November is coming! Here at CEC, we are continuing our celebration of Indigenous groups in the United States by recognizing National Native American Heritage Month. With the nuances and dynamics of this election season, we are adopting a theme from the State of California Native American Heritage Commission's 57th Annual Native American Day: "Recognizing 100 Years of Citizenship and the Fight for the Right to Vote: 1924-2024" This theme can engage learners in literary and informational texts 📖, rich dialogue and inquiry 🗣, and writing 📝 about the implications of citizenship and voting for Indigenous groups across the nation! You connect this theme with parallel dynamics of citizenship and voting with diverse groups in the U.S. ⚠️This theme may be a sensitive topic for many people; however, our learners can "Work on the Work" of learning about citizenship and voting for Indigenous groups and their community. What is an essential question❓️ that you can create using this year's theme for NNAHM? #cletiseducationconsulting #nativeamericanheritagemonth #curriculum #instruction #citizenship #voting
