How many computational biologists do you need? It’s a hard number to pin down, but I’d like to think through this with an example. Let’s say a well-oiled team of 4 biologists at the bench generates 12 large datasets a year. After the initial data generation, computational biologists need to: 1. Engineer a secure data storage/access system. 2. Build and maintain reproducible data processing pipelines. 3. Develop new methods or vet/benchmark existing methods to analyze the integrated datasets. 4. Clean/integrate/analyze the datasets and extract insights that the biologists at the bench can act on. These steps could easily require 3+ computational folks, depending on the complexity and scale of the datasets. It’s easy to see the team of 4 generating the data. But it’s harder to see the need for the other 3+ computational biologists to handle all the downstream steps. Companies often underestimate the amount of work that follows data generation and therefore hire fewer computational biologists than they actually need. #compbio #computationalbiology #bioinformatics
