ThrowbackThursday: Celebrating the rich traditions and folk influences that have woven their way into classical music! Today, let's shine a spotlight on two legendary violinists who have left an indelible mark on the world of music. Nathan Milstein's legacy is as timeless as the melodies he played. His refined technique and interpretations of classical repertoire transported audiences to ethereal realms. Yet, what truly sets Milstein apart is his profound advocacy for preserving and promoting Jewish folk music. Through his performances, he illuminated the beauty and resilience of his cultural heritage, bridging the past with the present. Gidon Kremer, a virtuoso beyond compare, dared to tread uncharted musical territories. His exploration of Eastern European folk music breathed new life into age-old melodies, infusing them with passion and vitality. Kremer fearlessly challenged traditional boundaries of classical music, venturing into bold collaborations with contemporary composers. In his hands, the violin became a vessel for cultural exchange, uniting diverse traditions in a harmonious symphony of humanity. As we reflect on the legacies of Milstein and Kremer, let's remember the power of music to break barriers, transcend boundaries and connect hearts. Their unwavering dedication to preserving and innovating within the confines of folk influences continues to inspire generations of musicians worldwide. Here's to honoring tradition while embracing the endless possibilities of artistic expression! #CnjAssociates #ClassicalMusic #FolkInfluences #MusicalLegends

Michael Barenboim is quite right in his setting out of the essence of this matter - as to Jewishness, as to Israel & as to what is egregiously at work in the trail of destruction, whereby Israel is cutting down so many Palestinians & on a daily basis for the last ten or eleven months. Simply put, Israel only represents itself & its own actions, not Jews as such & certainly far from ALL JEWS. Germany, given its history, may be acutely confused on all this & this no doubt influences its extreme clamp-down on all pro-Palestinian forums, protests, marches & expression, and yet: it is getting worse in the UK, too. Just see how, under Starmer's "leadership", left-wing journalists critical of a far-right Israel state policy of genocide have been accosted, abused & bailed, all in quasi- to para-legal ways at best, and surely, illegally & certainly unethically at worst. Look at what happened to Richard Medhurst. Look up also what is going on with Sarah Wilkinson. I tweeted Starmer & Lammy about this, who purport to run this joint called the UK. Will all of us who oppose this genocide be next? I am sure I am rather down the food chain of well-known critics of the UK & of Israel, but still, are we critics next? All of us? Or are they targeting these two quite well-known leftist journalists to send a message to me & a whole load of people like me? To shut up, mind our own business... Yet, what is global civil society other than a domain in which the ethical should be held in high esteem & be insisted on as UNIVERSALLY applicable, right? Should we not all be held up as models, those of us who care & want this genocide JUST TO END?! I do think so, but growing UK state authoritarianism seems to disagree... Will we be crushed under the wheels of this growing state authoritarianism? Is this the meaning of Keir Starmer's background? That he will help the security state to pick us all off, either slowly or by giving us the sense that we must be quiet? If so, then democracy is an empty formalism. We always thought democracy was at least partly a form of hypocrisy, but quite THIS bad, we never thought it to be, maybe. There is a line in the sand, then, & you must consider who you wish to join: the authoritarian swine at the top of the state machine who tell us to conform & shut up or those calling for substantive justice, no matter where that takes us? Be brave, be bold, do not let these w-authoritarians in sh-democratic clothing get away with their hypocrisies & their neo-colonial craving to suppress wider & deeper truth. Truths the West wishes to obscure: namely, its rise due to colonial violence bathed in the blood of Black, Brown & other vulnerable peoples globally. If you support Israel over Palestine, you are the West's colonial past & neo-colonial present. If you support Palestine, you see the history Israel hitherto has gotten away with, hidden by its Western power support. In short, Palestine is left & liberation; Israel, rightism & oppression embodied.
Jewish German Michael Barenboim, Head of Chamber Music at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin, categorically rejects what Israel stands for: "Israel tries to present itself as the only representation of J/ws, I don't want to be represented by Israel, quite the contrary"

Baroque music refers to the period or dominant style of Western classical music composed from about 1600 to 1750. The Baroque style followed the Renaissance period, and was followed in turn by the Classical period after a short transition (the galant style). The Baroque period is divided into three major phases: early, middle, and late. Overlapping in time, they are conventionally dated from 1580 to 1650, from 1630 to 1700, and from 1680 to 1750. Baroque music forms a major portion of the "classical music" canon, and is widely studied, performed, and listened to. The term "baroque" comes from the Portuguese word barroco, meaning "misshapen pearl" https://lnkd.in/dwG7sWkA

Hester, K. E. (2020). Pan-Africanism in jazz. In Routledge Handbook of Pan-Africanism (pp. 465-475). Routledge. ABSTRACT: African American jazz represents its vast African root system and is the culmination and synthesis of all earlier African American musical forms. There are infinite sociocultural features of Global African music that were incorporated into the powerful magnetism of jazz before being distilled into the modern and contemporary musical juba that was labeled “jazz.” Exploring the evolution of Homo sapiens culture through examining the progression of “jazz” from its African roots, delineates and parallels the historical migrations of humankind, from its African source, through the lens of musical instruments, iconography, cultural and ritual patterns, kinetic expression, and shared musical elements. To comprehend the myriad Pan-African cultural forces reflected in jazz, conscientious historical study of African music cannot restrict itself to the development of musical forms and style alone. The music is often highly ornamental (melismatic), much like the modern modal jazz of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Colman, and other musicians in jazz styles that emerged during the 1960s.
