How do we power the Moon? 🌙🔌 To support a permanent base on the Moon, we're going to need power... a LOT of it. But we can't just use conventional solar panels, space-rated fuel cells, or even the radioisotope thermoelectric generators used on the Voyager missions. Why not? The Moon presents some unique challenges which are only augmented when we also consider how that power source would work on Mars (let's kill two birds with one stone here!). So what's the answer? It might surprise you... nuclear fission reactors ☢️ Check out my latest video to learn more as I dive deeper into each space power source option, their pros and cons, and why nuclear fission is really the only option! BONUS: I also talk about why this development matters to life on Earth! 🌎Because after all, why do anything in space if it doesn't benefit humanity everywhere? #NASA #Moon #SpaceExploration #NuclearPower #CleanEnergy #NuclearMedicine

Some food for thought. The specific power (kW/kg) of the proposed lunar #nuclear rector is low. Very low. The NASA spec for the candidate nuclear reactor was more than 40 kw and less than 6000 kg. [1] That specific power is 6 Watts/kg. Recent announcements by Rolls-Royce are vague but imply a best case of about 100 kW and 3000kg or about 30 W/kg. In contrast, the best production space solar arrays can approach 140 W/kg with a upper limit of 200 W/kg within reach. [3] Using in-space assembly (#ISAM) instead of self-deployment, this limit can be pushed further. Solar power satellites, in an orbit about the moon and always in the sun, can beam continuous power receivers on the lunar surface. [4] This approach has the potential to deliver power 24/7 at a fraction of the mass and cost of a nuclear power plant on the moon. Without an atmosphere degrading the power and no existing power grid the moon may be the best first place for this

Disaster the Fukushima kind is not just a technology problem, but traceable to gaps in the operating system of a firm. After long period of high performance, many will fall into traps believing nothing can be better, if it ain’t broken, why anything can be a problem. Similar revelations are also in “Missing Links” by Drs. Phillip Mead and Laura Gallagher, reviews of NASA after space shuttle incidents. The takeaways are fresh in the mind, but how do we avoid rotting after the fixes is key IMHO. #transformation
