Welcome to South Africa’s first warm water ocean challenge of its kind. Founded by charities for charities, the Oceans 8 Charity Swim is more than just an event. We are a community united by a passion for swimming and commitment to make meaningful change in South Africa. First launched in 2023, our vision is to provide a reliable and sustainable flow of funding annually to 14 deserving non-profit organisations who have a footprint in KwaZulu-Natal. These funds support essential work in education, environmental protection, community development, and upliftment for those most in need. Our aim: • Position the event as one of the iconic events on the KZN sporting calendar and provide an exceptional experience for both participants and sponsors. • Attract a diverse group of swimmers and sports enthusiasts from beginners to seasoned athletes. • Promote environmental responsibility and raise awareness about ocean pollution. Continue our efforts to aim for a single-use plastic-free event, selling the example to all sporting events regarding hydration of participants. • Encourage an active lifestyle and mental wellbeing through open-water swimming, one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. • Provide a platform annually for our 14 benefitting charities to amplify their missions, increasing public awareness and understanding of their work. • Stimulate the economy, supporting local businesses and community projects by engaging with like-minded suppliers and service providers. • Maintain high standards of organization and auditing, ensuring all funds raised are accounted for and transparently distributed to charities. • Align with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals *(Source: THE 17 GOALS | Sustainable Development [un.org])

While public pools might seem an indulgent thing, they're an increasingly important public infrastructure that provides rest, play, social connection, exercise, and respite from the heat for many people who live away form the coast or rivers or lakes, or who find pools a safer, more accessible option that open waters. In the UK, access to swimming pools has diminished as leisure centres have closed, or ocean pools have fallen into disrepair. As the planet warms and as participation in swimming is growing again the short-sightedness of government in letting this happen becomes glaringly obvious. Austerity measures that kill public infrastructures are always a bad idea. In the UK, Future Lidos does incredible work advocating and fundraising for communities to 'revive or create' outdoor pools for communities across the UK. So far they've worked on and connected over 30 projects, and are working with over 130 others on projects for future pool development, repair and restoration. Much of their work is consulting on development or restoration projects and fundraising to make sure these works can happen. They reply on public funding, so if you would like to help them keep doing this work then please consider making a one-off donation and share the campaign with others. https://lnkd.in/gs5gsWGc Chris Romer-Lee Taylor Butler-Eldridge Mark Cooper Deborah Aydon Swim England

🌊 Support Drowning Prevention for DC Youth: Support Free Swim Lessons in DC! 🌊 Dear Friends, Advocates, Coaches, Swimmers, and Supporters, We are excited to announce our new fundraising campaign to support a cause that is making waves in our community! Our nonprofit organization, SWIM UP, is dedicated to providing free weekly swim lessons to youth in Washington, DC, from traditionally underserved neighborhoods. These lessons are more than just an opportunity to learn to swim—they’re a gateway to safety, confidence, and lifelong skills. Our students typically may not have had access or exposure to swim lessons. Why Your Support Matters: 1) Safety First: Swimming is a vital life skill that can prevent drowning, a risk that disproportionately affects children of color and youth from underserved communities. 2) Confidence Boost: Learning to swim empowers kids, helping them build self-esteem and overcome challenges. 3) Community Impact: By supporting our program, you’re investing in the future of our youth and fostering a sense of community and belonging. How You Can Help: Donate: Your financial contributions directly fund the swim lessons, provide equipment, transportation, and support our dedicated instructors. Spread the Word: Share our campaign with friends, family, and colleagues to amplify our message. Volunteer: Get involved by helping us organize events or spread awareness. Our Goal: $10,000 We aim to raise $10,000 to cover the costs of swim lessons for the next year. Every dollar makes a difference and helps us reach more children who will benefit from this life-changing opportunity. Donate Now: https://lnkd.in/eX7TWgxf Join us in creating a ripple effect of positive change in our community. Together, we can ensure that every child in DC has the chance to learn to swim, stay safe, and thrive! Please visit swimup.org to learn more. Thank you for your support and commitment to making a difference. Let’s make waves together! Warm regards, Mary Bergstrom Founder - SWIM UP
