Restoring our landscapes through nature-based solutions offers multiple opportunities to restore health of ecosystems, ensuring healthier soil, more productive lands, and hence better incomes and prosperity for people, particularly those dependent on forests and farmlands for their sustenance. This #WorldSoilDay, let's recognize and celebrate local action towards enabling resilient ecosystems in India. Sidhi, a remote, rural district in Madhya Pradesh, is restoring its landscapes and creating wealth of opportunities for its local communities through landscape restoration. This is a win-win opportunity for people, nature and climate, with a potential to generate 3000 microenterprises, employment for 30,000 individuals and restore more than 300,000 hectares of land. Restoration efforts help to combat soil erosion, improve soil health, and sequester carbon, aligning with the goals of World Soil Day. Let's learn what implementing landscape restoration or भूदृश्य बहाली in Sidhi district looks like, with a diverse range of restoration solutions in Hindi. #GenerationRestoration #LandscapeRestoration #Sustainability #ClimateAction #LandscapeRestoration #SoilErosion #SoilConservation #SoilHealth #CarbonSequestration

Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh is representative of the land use challenges, socio-economic and environmental issues confronting underdeveloped landscapes in India. However, it also has a high potential for nature-based solutions such as landscape restoration. This means that we can protect Sidhi’s forestland, grow more trees outside its forests and strengthen multiple ecosystem benefits for its people. This will not only help us mitigate climate risks, but also ensure food and nutrition security, better livelihood opportunities, and more jobs for local people. Sidhi's restoration journey began with watershed management and led to implementation of 8 other interventions such as assisted natural regeneration, mixed-species plantation, trees on boundaries and bamboo plantation among others. Learn more about how Sidhi's restoration potential was unlocked in this report: https://lnkd.in/dt-h8zU #GenerationRestoration #climatechange #livelihoods #landscaperestoration #circulareconomy #restorationeconomy #NbS Dr. Ruchika Singh | Kavita Sharma | Divya Sharma | Srishti Kochhar | Siddharth Edake | Jyoti Yadav | Nabajyoti Roy | Paresh Parab | Shweta P. | Kritika Gadhvi | Anjali Rao Koppala | Oindrila Basu | Raghav Srivastava | Meenakshi Kakar | Dushasana Mahanta | Major Ved Prakash Sharma

Amidst the bustle of the city, Annapurna Lake stood as a sacred yet suffering waterbody. Last year, the lake faced a dire crisis—thousands of fish died. When we began this journey, the challenges were immense: ➤ Two active sewage inlets. ➤ Continuous dumping of religious waste. But with perseverance and innovation, we made a difference. 1. Installed 5 floating wetlands to sustainably purify the water. 2. Deployed a floating solar lotus aerator for oxygenation. 3. Dosing of beneficial microbial culture to restore CoD and BoD Today, the waters of Annapurna Lake are pristine—clear water and a testimony to what sustainable efforts can achieve. Sacred spaces deserve mindful preservation. Want to collaborate or learn more about rejuvenating waterbodies? Let’s connect and make a difference together! What is making us rethink about Protected Areas (PAs) in India? Rethinking Protected Areas: Beyond Boundaries and into Communities. As we revisit the concept of Protected Areas (PAs) in India, we're drawn to reflect on a definition set by the Convention on Biological Diversity: “A Protected Area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated, and managed through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.” Yet, this definition leaves us pondering—what about the communities that call these spaces home? The global and national conservation strategies largely focus on expanding PAs, but we must question the implications for the indigenous communities living within these boundaries. Recently, a thought-provoking workshop on Protected Areas was held at TISS, Mumbai, co-organized by Kalpavriksh, Khoj, and Tata Institute of Social Sciences. This gathering brought together voices from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. Community members, academicians, and development practitioners shared their field experiences, struggles, and ongoing efforts. A resounding theme emerged: True conservation can only be achieved when we recognize and integrate all elements of the ecosystem, including the traditional knowledge, livelihoods, and cultures of tribal communities. Despite empowering laws like the Forest Rights Act (FRA) and supportive court rulings, many communities still face uphill battles to claim their rightful place within these protected areas. It's time to rethink conservation—not just as a means to protect wildlife, but as a holistic approach that embraces the entire ecosystem, including its human inhabitants. Let's move towards a future where conservation and community coexist in harmony. 🌍🤝 #Conservation #CommunityRights #ProtectedAreas #EcosystemApproach #Sustainability #FRA Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai Tata Institute of Social Sciences

In November 2022, 9000 saplings were planted on an open piece of land in rural Maharashtra. By November 2024, that land has grown into a green space. Through projects like this, SayTrees is turning open lands into forests with the support of organizations working to expand the nation’s green cover. Every year, these efforts are adding more green spaces across the country, one plantation at a time. Lantana camara is recognised as one of the top ten worst invasive species globally. This highly adaptable thorny shrub has overrun more than 47% of Indian forests. Despite the escalating crisis, active initiatives to combat this invasive menace have remained scarce. Forest authorities across India have attempted various lantana removal programs. In 2022, the forest department in Bandipur initiated a program to eradicate Lantana under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) program. Similarly, in 2020, forest officials in Rajasthan courageously undertook Lantana removal and native species replanting efforts to restore ecological balance. However, the lingering question remains: Are these individual and isolated efforts sufficient to counter the ever-expanding toxic shrub? . . . . #LinkedinforNonprofits #VisualStorytelling #Storytelling #IllustratedStories #SocialSector #Lantana #CreativeAgency #Marketing #Communications #SimitBhagatStudios

Jalandhar / Amritsar Tribune 14-10-2024 Open house: Are citizens not paying with their health for admn’s failure to check the felling of trees? Indiscriminate axing of trees a blow to nature’s diversity Numbering of trees can prevent felling It takes years for a sapling to become a tree. A fully grown tree, as is well known, is the source of oxygen during the daytime. There are trees like Peepal and Bhohad that release oxygen round the clock. Unfortunately, these trees that are decades old are sometimes axed to carry out development works. Resentment among the public is but natural. A number of trees have been axed to carry out the widening of national highways. On the one hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a clarion call to plant one sapling in the name of one’s mother, “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”. The axing of trees, especially in congested urban areas where the population is in large numbers, is unfortunate because these trees give shade and protection from sunlight besides providing numerous other benefits. They also give shelter to a number of species. The Forest Department should mark the trees by numbering them in the urban and rural areas so that seeking permission for axing these trees becomes mandatory. Also, the Forest Department should allow axing of trees only if it is utterly necessary. The Forest Department should verify if new saplings have been planted after the axing of old trees. It should appoint a task force to keep a check on the axing of trees on a permanent basis. It is trees that keep the ecological balance intact and environment free of pollution. Why then is the axing of trees allowed in the first place? There is need for environmental awareness to protect the trees, especially the ones that are old.
