This is a positive if imperfect development. But a couple of nuggets beyond the headline of particular interest are the commitments to double energy efficiency and increase storage capacity 6 fold. According to LLNL ~%68 percent of energy generated in the US is wasted. Such a simple but impactful place to start. The storage capacity increase is interesting too because that will enable all sorts of good things like intermittent renewable sources, islanding and VPPs. Lots of good work being done in storage tech to address sustainability issues related to common chemistries. https://lnkd.in/gyra7kzV

#COP28 brought major announcements on methane emissions reduction: A $1B task fund was established; there is new U.S. legislation for oil and gas companies to manage #methane; and the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership Fund is in action. The Global Methane Pledge promised a 30% emissions reduction from 2020 levels. How will this fund be leveraged to achieve this measure and reduce methane in high-emission regions? Do we need stricter measures to push for greater action from operators? To reach these targets, we need to unite organizations behind a common roadmap. At ENGIE, we believe in leading by example. Beyond the tense high level discussions at #COP29, good to see the UK joining other nations and non-state actors behind a pledge to deliver a six fold increase in the global deployment of energy #storage capacity by 2030. Together with pledges made at last year's #COP28 to treble #renewables capacity and double #energyefficiency by 2030, these will be important actions to support the decarbonisation of power grids and support many sectors' shifts towards electrification (heating, surface transport, heavy industrial sectors like steel). However, to be tangible, these sorts of pledges must be reflected in the national climate and energy action plans of major emitting nations ahead of the #COP30 #climate summit in Brazil next year: https://lnkd.in/eps7V_9e #netzero
