What are the emerging technologies coming together to make open autonomous haulage in underground mining possible? Driverless haul truck fleets have been in use in open-pit mining for 20 years, but underground mining is still largely limited to autonomous haulage in closed environments (without people or other vehicles). To enable fully autonomous open haulage fleets underground, we need several key systems working together: -         Autonomous Haulage Systems -         Functional Safety Systems -         Fleet Management Systems -         Communication and Localization -         Data and Cybersecurity Systems. These systems are all necessary for dispatching trucks to loading points, driving to dump points, and dumping material safely. And, they all exist because of their underlying technologies. This shift towards zero entry in haulage demonstrates its potential in safeguarding workers. Being able to increase efficiency will also be a benefit of moving to automation, with operations able to continue through shift changes instead of loosing up to an hour of each shift in operators travelling to and from operational zones. Moving away from manual trucks also opens the potential for maintenance to be better predicted with computers and analytics integrated into products. This means maintenance can be completed proactively opposed to in reaction of incidents and potential accidents. Loved this BBC article today! Mining is a perfect industry where the gains from automation, augmentation and autonomy are obvious - removing humans from unsafe environments & dull and dangerous jobs. It is great to see Rio Tinto being the trail blazer here. But as the article mentions, this comes with its flaws - a safety first mindset and understanding of how humans interact with these solutions is key to their success and prolonged use. This becomes even more important if you seek to use modern AI for any of it to decrease development cost. And if course, the mining industry has other challenges posed by the energy transition - need for more mineral output whilst remaining carbon neutral. More innovation is needed and we would love to talk to you about some of the stuff we see coming in this space!! #ttp #autonomy #mining
