Though at Seahorse we get to work on campaigns and businesses that advance decarbonisation and environmental causes, every so often you get the opportunity to work on a project that deep dives into the dynamics of change in a certain sector. Today marks the launch of SSWAN: Sustainable Solutions for Water and Nature, and I’m enormously proud of the role Seahorse has played in supporting a coalition of both industry and NGO voices setting out the change needed from the water sector. The initiatives, call to action, case studies and discussion paper aren’t overnight silver bullets for creating a water system that addresses all concerns, but they do represent a structural shift in how we think about pollution and responsibility, and about how we better consider nature and manage our water courses with an approach that factors in carbon, societal well-being and cost at catchment level. The team at Wessex Water have been so generous with their time, enthusiasm and dedication to the project and have provided so much of the deep thinking it's needed as well as opening up their business plan. Thanks also to the advisory panel (members thanked below) who have spent months reviewing content, providing feedback and submitting case studies that show these solutions are successful and can be implemented. SSWAN Chair, Shaun Spiers highlighted last week that the span of industry and environment groups supporting the call to action is unprecedented and I think that level of expertise really shows in the evidence and thought across the website and papers. Thanks also to Mark Caines and the team at Flint Global for developing a discussion paper that suggests how this could work in practice, practical steps that are so often the barriers to getting good ideas into policy discussion. Of course a call to action and discussion paper are early steps in implementing the changes and practices we’d need to deliver a better nature focused system. Profitable Sustainability: Turning Expenses into Revenue! I crafted a strategy for this business using principles of sustainability and circular economics to turn a hefty materials expense into a new service for the business that instead created profitable revenue that paid THEM for their materials. This also worked to challenge a monopoly in the industry and allowed landscapers to offload their materials for half the price. Huge win for both land stewards and the environment. 🌲Reforesting Together for a Greener Future 🌍 This week, our PNO Germany team took a meaningful step forward in our commitment to community and sustainability by joining The Annual LIHH Tree Planting Campaign. A  hands-on environmental initiative organized by the Logistics Initiative Hamburg (LIHH) to support reforestation by planting trees in Klövensteen Forest. It is an effort that goes beyond reforestation and aims to build resilient ecosystems. 🌱 Working in pairs, we dug in (literally!) and carefully replanted each seedling, ensuring the humus layer would protect and nourish new growth. This careful planting process helps promote healthier forests that are more resistant to climate change. 🍃 PNO’s commitment is hands-on, impactful, and community-focused. Today, on 🌊 World Water Day 🌊, we mark a year since the UN launched efforts to meet water-related goals in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Xploration Coastline Concept, endorsed by the UN, stands out for its open innovation, social engagement, and innovative financing, redefining water as a common resource. It's not just a product or service but a comprehensive approach, driven by a mission to address challenges and share insights. Maintaining engagement from diverse stakeholders requires focus and energy, but it's essential for these inclusive initiatives. We do this by developing and sharing knowledge, communicating inspiring examples and hosting events to connect people and organizations.  

On March 13, our team, represented by Iñaki Munduate Etxarri and Aitor Mier, was honored to welcome the Vice Minister of Sustainability of the Basque Government, Aitor Aldasoro, and the Water Agency Director, Antonio Aiz Salazar, to our plant in Tolosa, Spain. During their visit, they were introduced to our decarbonization and water recirculation projects, and we are proud to say that we received very positive feedback and commitment from them to facilitate these stretching and demanding projects.   "Sustainability is part of Munksjö's DNA, and many of our resources are devoted to ensuring environmental targets," says Iñaki, Plant Manager of Munksjö Tolosa. For many decades, the Tolosa plant has focused on systematically managing the environmental impact of decor paper manufacturing, and we are proud to say that our site is certified according to the internationally recognized environmental management standards ISO 14001 and EMAS.   As we approach the International Day of Water on March 22, we want to highlight that reducing water use in our operations is one of Munksjö's top sustainability priorities.
