Things you don’t expect to see at Big Yellow. This week saw this impressive sandcastle mermaid sculpture, created for The Ivy Collection by Sand in Your Eye, arrive at one of our stores. Our safe and secure storage space will house the sculpture until the grand opening of The Ivy Bournemouth in November.

Structural concept is associated with buildings, bridges, dams, but not with sculpture. The Bronze Horseman is a statue of Peter the Great in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The statue opened in August 1782 and created by French sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet. The combination of a cantilever structure and the dynamic form of the statue is interesting. I like to believe that the angle of the horse, the slope of the stone base, and the 3-point connections (horse legs and the tail) have a structural function as much as aesthetic function. The balance among the forces as intriguing as the artwork.

This raises the question: What is a great art Master? A great #artmaster is one that at such venerable age is capable of generating a succinct yet powerful statement such as #Serra ‘s one: ‘the virtual denies tactility’; and by doing so gives way to a #counter narrative on the positive impact of #AI #VR and the likes on the realm of art. As #richardserra puts it, the #virtual kills the full character of art as an #arsthetic #experience ; because, in order for the aesthetic experience to exist, one needs all the senses to be activated by art, including the tactile one. We are saddened to hear of the passing of Richard Serra. Serra studied form, including its mass, weight, ability to delineate space, and the ways it behaves under the pressures of gravity. As a result, his sculptures produce in us a heightened awareness of our surroundings. They are spaces to contemplate—to experience our “total senses.” We are deeply grateful for his boundless creativity, his long friendship with us, and generosity to MoMA. In 2015 we interviewed Serra about “Equal,” a 320-ton sculpture composed of four stacked pairs of forged steel blocks, currently on view in our second floor galleries. Janet Echelman’s newest permanent work, Bending Arc, is composed of 1,662,528 knots and 180 miles of twine, the aerial sculpture spans 424 feet and measures 72 feet at its tallest point. Echelman’s art embraces change. The monumental sculpture gently billows above the Pier District, allowing the wind to create a choreography of constantly changing shape in the sculpture’s soft surface.
