Remember the chaos of stocking a Build Your Own Anything fixture? I've been there. It's a never-ending puzzle of misplaced pieces that can quickly derail your productivity. Early in my career at Disney's Animal Kingdom, I faced this challenge head-on. The Mr. Potato Head fixture was a constant source of frustration, demanding constant attention. But I refused to let it dictate my day. I took it upon myself to implement a simple yet effective solution: I used a shopping basket to gather stray pieces and store them in the back room. This kept the fixture looking tidy without sacrificing sales. At the end of the day, I'd restock the fixture, allowing me to focus on other tasks throughout the shift. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: There's always a more efficient way. By thinking outside the box, I was able to streamline my work and improve my overall productivity. I can't stand the phrase, "We've always done it that way," and I challenge it when it makes sense. I challenge you to look at your operation and see where you are inefficient based on legacy processes. Think outside the box and come up with something that saves you time, creates a better atmosphere, and drives revenue.

I originally saw this picture from Paul Dunlop. In his post, he focused on the importance of clear standards and how they can empower a business to be more effective and satisfy customers. ❓But what to make of this drawing? Is it a good quality standard or no? 📌It uses good visual management 🚦 by using colors to map the level of severity of errors in each part of the manufactured seat. 📌However, the actions assigned to each zone don't make sense. 📌 When using stoplight 🚦 colors, There should be a logical progression of severity from Green 🟢 to Red 🔴. 📌The graphic below indicates that Green and Red indicate the acceptability of flaws in the seat. However, in this instance the Yellow 🟡 indicates something totally different - A progression of approval from front line worker to supervisor. 📌Shouldn't this be a standing rule no matter what section it is in? what if you're unsure if a defect should be accepted in the green 🟢 area? Should you NOT ask a supervisor, because that activity is reserved for the yellow 🟡? 📌 Does yellow allow more flaws than Red 🔴 and less than Green🟢? You make think so, but this isn't supported by what the document. 📌There's also ambiguity in defining major, minor, and medium flaws. Left undefined, this will lead to either too many bad seats sent to the customer, or too many good seats being rejected. Either way, it's inefficient waste 🗑️. -- #innovation #problemsolving #operations #standards #lean #operationsmanagement

I’ve walked into boardrooms in a 3-piece suit and flip-flops. And, yes, I’ve closed multi-million $ deals doing it. I don't care what I wear. I really don't. Why? Staying true to myself (and staying comfy) delivers the best results. Professional image? It has its place. But it's also bollocks. People bend to outdated standards of “looking the part” all the time. They think it validates their skills or makes them more credible. It really doesn’t 🙄 The reality↓ When you’re comfortable, you’re unstoppable. I don’t need to trade my happiness or authenticity to fit someone else’s mold of “professional.” I can show up as myself, and STILL drive insane results. Am I unemployable by traditional standards? Probably. But I’ll take real outcomes over playing dress-up any day. What’s the most “unprofessional” thing you do at work? (More importantly... Does it boost your results? 👀) ✌️🧡🌮

Let’s talk: Summer Associate Wardrobe on a law school budget! If you will be working at a Big Law firm or require a business-oriented wardrobe, now is a great time to review what’s in your closet and figure out what additional pieces you might need. Firm Culture: Once you know the culture of your firm, courthouse or workplace, you can start understanding the dress code. Plan to mix and match: Make it a goal to build a wardrobe that you can mix and match easily. Try to acquire pieces that will complement each other and that could easily be swapped in and out to make different outfits. Try a neutral color theme! Shop a variety of places: Whether it’s your local Goodwill, consignment shops, online thrift stores such as Poshmark or thredUP, or big box retailers (think Nordstrom Rack, Costco, Target, TJ Maxx, Marshalls and more), there are a multitude of options and amazing deals to be had even on designer suits. Consider renting your clothes: You’ll get new clothes that fit your style — or that of your employer — and never have to worry about dry cleaning. Saving money, saving time! Go for quality: While there are many ways to avoid breaking the bank on your summer wardrobe, in some ways it also makes sense to have a few quality pieces on hand. And lastly don’t forget to scope out sales and discounts! What pieces are must haves in your summer associate wardrobe?

#D5 Five simple hack for unique output in whatever you do. 1. Personalize Your Approach by adding a personal touch to everyday tasks. For instace, if you write notes or emails, use personalized stationery or custom signatures. This makes even routine communications feel special and unique. 2. Focus on Details by Paying attention to small details that others might overlook. Whether it's the way you wrap gifts, arrange flowers, or set a table, adding thoughtful, meticulous details can transform the ordinary into something unique. 3. Incorporate Creativity by infusing creativity into mundane activities. If you're organizing your workspace, using colorful or themed items instead of standard ones can turn a routine recipe into something unique by adding your own twist or experimenting with ingredients. 4. Embrace Unconventional Methods by trying to do things differently from the norm. If you usually follow a specific routine or method, mix it up. For instance, take a new route for your daily walk, use different tools or techniques for your hobbies, or adopt a different perspective in problem-solving. 5. Here's something I don't do to often...share a selfie... But this is the look of a very hot, sweaty, tired, man who spent a long hot day in the glassblowing hot shop today... My goal for today wasn't really to make anything specific, it was simply to repetitively practice some of my basic skills. My goal for today was to work hotter, and push myself by working independently. Usually, we all work with at least one assistant to take a heat for us, grab a punty, lay out the colors or sometimes even just bring us something to drink. My goal today? To push my work to the point of failure (in this case, failure is success!), and to understand what failed, why, and recognize it soon enough to prevent it from happening next time. In this regard, I was wildly successful today. Of the four pieces I made, three were total failure/successes. My final piece I didn't push that hard, because I wanted a little something to show for the day. My first piece that was supposed to be a small vase ended-up as a slag-heap of a paperweight when I overheated the bubble and it collapsed. Another was also supposed to be a small vase (a very convenient shape for practice), and ended-up as an about 6-inch sphere. I overinflated it and ended-up with a sphere that was to thin to use as any type of vessel and so it's just sort of a glass "bubble." A third ended-up off-balance and a large amount of the molten glass went off-center, and blew a large bubble out the side of the piece, which then collapsed. What I ended up with was something akin to a conch shell made of glass. My fourth piece came out nearly exactly the way I wanted it, in that it was a small and wide juice glass. Very simple, clear glass. It was all about just refining the skills. Adding color is expensive, and when your practicing for technique and to improve skill, doesn't add to the goal, unless your goal happens to include examining how different colors heat and work together. So I worked just in clear molten glass today. Also worked entirely alone today. Have no assistant at all, it was very satisfying to work alone, and know that I have the skills to do this, and with even more time and practice, will continue to get better. You really need an assistant to get past small and simple items...I've worked with as many as three (plus me) before, and as-is the case with any team that works well together, spreading the work around and sharing skills, guidance and advice among the team benefits everyone...and the piece. This photo doesn't show it well, but, I was hot, tired, dripping with beads of sweat, my clothes damp from sweat...and happy. #GlassArt #HotShop #Creativity #Craftsmanship #ArtisticJourney #Handcrafted #ArtCommunity #GlassblowingJourney #Glassblowing #Glassmates #EmbraceTheChallenge #LearnAndCreate #ArtisticAdventureme! #Maine #Art #TribeLife #ReadReed

They’re the oldest glass manufacturer in the U.S. based right here in Pittsburgh 🤯 When I walked in the door a nice lady greeted me and I learned she has been with the company for over 40 years. You’d recognize some of the most popular bourbon bottles they make sitting on your shelf at home. Once you step inside, you would never know this was the oldest glass manufacturer in the US. There were fresh renovations and updates throughout the facility. There are plans for continued investment that will support the next generation of Pittsburgh talent. This is what I saw on my recent tour of Stoelzle Glass as we were in the process of helping them hire some of Pittsburgh's top talent. I've always believed in understanding a company's culture beyond the job description. Stepping into Stoelzle's facility helped bring the job descriptions to life. Right away I felt the heat, the noise, the power, and the passion people had for being here. The sheer scale of the operation was INTENSE. But it was the PEOPLE who truly captivated me. - 40-year veteran greeting guests at the front door (That's LOYALTY right there). - People working hard but also enjoying the work they do. - Engineers and craftspeople working side-by-side. A site visit is not just a tour, it's an immersion. It's WITNESSING firsthand: - How employees INTERACT - How they TALK about their work - How they EMBODY the company's values It's about experiencing the energy, the passion, the daily rhythms that make a workplace UNIQUE. This is how you match exceptional talent with exceptional organizations. Thanks Stoelzle Glass Group for allowing us to be a small part of your great company! And special thanks to Ross Wachowski for giving us the tour! If you’re interested in working for a Glass company rich in history with big plans for the future, please reach out to me for details. P.S. If you are in Pittsburgh and are hiring in the next 3 months, let’s have a chat. We will meet in person at your office or facility, and use it as a jump start for the great hard working people of Pittsburgh to learn what makes you unique.
