When does an empire die? It dies when no one believes in it anymore. I believe that live entertainment is at a tipping point. Cancellation after cancellation shows that something is wrong. Government grants are band-aids, they aren't going to the root cause. We need to re-think how these business models work. How? Data. Imagine the possibilites of a collective, transparent data centre that everyone in the industry can access, make accurate business decisions, and figure out what the next version of fan powered music festivals could be. Music Ally started life writing mainly about technology and music: new startups and trends in digital music and the industry emerging around it. However, over the years we’ve been working hard to also cover music policy: not just calls from the industry for regulation of whatever’s disrupting it at the time (piracy —> YouTube —> AI), but also the constructive work of mapping out future support for musicians, venues, music companies and the supportive framework around them. Music cities, national music strategies… there’s a lot of work going on around the world on this front. Which is why today we’re visiting New South Wales in Australia, with its government having just unveiled its ‘NSW Contemporary Music Strategy’ 10-year plan for its music industry. “This strategy, built on a theme of collaboration, is a 10-year plan for strengthening the NSW music industry through upskilling, improving conditions and infrastructure and championing its output,” is how the report sets out its stall.
