Know the Hand Signal: Copenhagen Cyclists' Communication Copenhagen Road Safety & Active Travel Series - Post #11 The Copenhagen cyclist stop signal. This is the most important hand signal you need to know when cycling in Copenhagen. It’s the way that you tell people behind you that you are preparing to stop. Because of the popularity of cycling throughout the city and the number of cyclists on the road, there is a strong cultural expectation that you know and use your hand signs.. Image: shot of cyclist from behind doing the ‘stopping’ hand signal. PS: This seems to be a universal hand signal if I'm not mistaken as we use it in Melb, too 🤓 About this series: Over the next 3 months, we'll share curated snapshots of Copenhagen's streets and urban environment. Our goal is to bring more road safety and active travel learnings to Australia/New Zealand. Stay tuned! Before 1962 Copenhagen was a city dominated by cars. Since then, the city has evolved to become one of the most pedestrian and cyclist friendly places in the world. Apart from Australia’s royal connection with Denmark, several Australian cities have been strongly influenced by Danish approaches to urban design. Seeing is believing and the snapshots we’re bringing you provide an opportunity to imagine what is possible. 🚴♀️🌟 By 2014, Copenhagen was already a cyclist's dream, but safety concerns were starting to create roadblocks for commuters... So what did they do? They turned to #designthinking! 🚦💡 With over 50% of residents biking daily, the city identified key challenges like narrow lanes and unclear intersections. The solution? A revolutionary "superhighway" bike lane concept featuring dedicated lanes, improved signage, and smart traffic lights that prioritize cyclists! By 2019, these changes expanded the cycling network by over 15%, reduced accidents by 20%, and cut travel times for cyclists by 10%! 🚲💨 Copenhagen's commitment to creating a safer, more efficient cycling environment is paving the way for a greener future! 🌍❤️ #Copenhagen #CyclingCity #SustainableTransport

Unlock revenue streams in cycling tourism The cycling tourism market is growing, driven by the increasing focus on health, wellness, and adventure. Cycling tourism, which fuels over half a million jobs in the EU, offers small businesses dual revenue streams: bike tours and rentals. Bike tours, varying from long-distance travels and organized events to city exploration and destination rides, enrich local economies and integrate seamlessly with urban infrastructure advancements. Bike rentals cater to tourists without bikes, enhancing service versatility with options for various durations and additional cycling gear. This combination of tours and rentals taps into the market’s diverse needs, presenting a robust opportunity for growth in local communities. #bikerental #bikerentals #bikerentmanager #cycling #sustainablefuture #bikehire

The Netherlands is big on biking AND has lots of water. So why are the Dutch canals not buzzing with these hydrofoils bikes? Well the first reason is obvious, as a Dutchmen I know too well we are very cost conscious - let's call it cheap. It will be hard to compete with inexpensive city bikes. But there is more. One of the reasons biking works so well in the Netherlands is the biking infrastructure. From free standing bike paths, to underground parking close to train stations the Netherlands is designed for biking. For this water bike to take off, we need to create something similar: Biking lines in canals, places to park your bike safely and get on dry land and perhaps even showers to change in a work outfit. As cities get more compact with less cars, this may well be the future. What do you think? #regeneration #circulareconomy #biking

Discover the staggering success behind Seville, Spain's cycling revolution: 🚲 77km of protected cycling infrastructure completed in under 2 years! 🚲 Cycling network expanded from 12km to 180km! 📈 Daily cycling trips surged from 6,000 in 2006 to over 70,000 today! 💰 0.27 million euros per km in construction cost, compared to 35.2 million euros for subways! Other factors for Serville's success include prioritizing safety, ease and comfort for everyone. Based on Dutch, German and Danish best practice, the network’s design focuses on continuity, cohesion, directness, visibility, and comfort. Building bi-directional paths and swift construction were deliberate choices critical to the overall success.
