Today’s “African Americans and the Arts” Black History Month spotlight is Natasha Jean-Pierre, senior advisor for the Rasmussen University Ocala campus. Q: Which art form most inspires you? “I am most inspired by literary art. Poetry and short stories are my go-to for inspiration. Words can paint a picture in the mind without brushes, offer travel without physical movement and create rhythm without musical instruments. I am in awe at the emotion and thought literary art can evoke. To genuinely laugh out loud, cry or rejoice through reading is a small but meaningful gift. One of my favorite poems is ‘Weekend Glory’ by Maya Angelou.” Q: What does Black History Month mean to you? “Recently, I have been able to reconcile the conflict I had with only a month dedicated to Black history. Just as our lives are important all year round, we take one day to celebrate our birthdays (some of us celebrate for longer). From this perspective, I can better absorb the celebration during the month of February and pay homage to Mother Africa and her impact across continents. I love seeing the African print come out during Black History Month, along with the connectivity that takes place amongst vast ethnic groups and cultures impacted by the African diaspora. Black History Month is a pause to acknowledge and celebrate the ongoing contributions and legacy of Black people through steady variants of turbulence.” #BlackHistoryMonth #RasPride

This Black History Month, CNM takes pride in recognizing the rich contributions of African Americans in the Arts. Today, we draw inspiration from Jimi Hendrix's timeless words. In the spirit of these profound words, we reflect on the power of love, unity, and creativity that has shaped the narrative of African Americans in the Arts. From music and dance to literature and visual arts, their transformative impact has resonated globally, breaking barriers and inspiring generations. African American artists have harmonized the world with their diverse expressions of love through music. From the soulful melodies of Aretha Franklin to the revolutionary beats of Kendrick Lamar as well, they've each used music to bring people together and foster understanding through music. Throughout this month and beyond, we invite our community to engage in conversations, share stories, and celebrate the achievements of African Americans.
