By fostering a culture of compassion and excellence, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to deliver their best. 2. Empower Others: True leadership involves lifting others up. Encourage your team members to share their ideas and strengths. When we invest in developing future leaders, we not only improve the quality of care but also build a stronger community. 3. 14 years ago, I passed the Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA) exam, marking the beginning of an incredible journey in healthcare leadership. It’s been a path filled with growth, challenges, and invaluable lessons. Today, I want to celebrate that milestone by sharing some key insights that have guided me through my years as an administrator. Here are my top 20 reminders for leadership in healthcare: 1. Adapt and Evolve: Healthcare is ever-changing; resilience and adaptability are essential. 2. Celebrate Wins, Big and Small: Recognize progress and celebrate successes to maintain morale. 3. Make Data-Driven Decisions: Trust the numbers, but don’t overlook the human impact. 4. Never Stop Learning: The best leaders are always learning, evolving, and improving. 5. Every person counts, from staff to residents to families. 6. Respect is the root of effective communication. 7. Think long-term, but focus on today. 8. Invest time in training and development. 9. I was recently asked to share my 'leadership story' for an internal publication. I focused on a great example of leadership from a role I held early in my career, which has always stayed with me: "I think the first time in my nursing career I really noticed good leadership was just after the 2008 financial crash. Budget cuts meant my team was halved in size, with a mixture of redundancies and redeployments. It was a difficult and uncertain time for everyone, and yet our team leader somehow managed to keep morale surprisingly high. "I later reflected on how they had managed it, and I think it came down to two things: "Focusing the team on their goal to provide the best care to patients Listening to, and supporting, staff "In the 15 years I have been in the NHS, there have always been difficult decisions to make, financial challenges and increasing demand for services. That means leaders are constantly required to guide teams through tough times, but I know I can always fall back on those two things; focusing teams on providing the best care we can with the resources we have, and listening to staff and offering them the support they need. "As nurses we always put patients first, often at the detriment of our own wellbeing. It can feel like we are constantly up against it, trying to do more with less. A good leader knows how to galvanise people and help them understand the value they provide, concentrating on where we can have the biggest impact for patients. Being able to do this means that, no matter how tough the day has been, nurses can go home knowing they made a difference. The impact on morale is powerful. "At the same time, it’s important not to fall into the trap of thinking nurses are superheroes. Leadership is also about making sure we take care of each other, so that we can give our best. Good leaders listen to their colleagues’ concerns, and think about the whole person, factoring in both professional and personal challenges. If someone is going through a tough time, we need to show our concern and offer support. "I think if we can do these two things – focus on the difference we make for patients and show support for our colleagues – we can lead staff through the most challenging of times."

🌟 #MentorshipMonday: Be a Visionary Leader 🌟 Last week, we had the honor of hosting the recipient of the Visionary Leader Award on our NursesWithVoices podcast, the founder of DNPs of Color. This inspiring initiative ensures that Doctor of Nursing Practice professionals of color feel proud of their accomplishments and know they are not alone. Today, I want to share a story from my nursing career to inspire you. Early in my career, I noticed a significant gap in support for new nurses transitioning into the profession. Subsequently, I noticed a similar gap as a new nurse leader. Despite the challenges, I envisioned a mentoring program that would bridge these gap, providing guidance and fostering confidence in new nurses and nurse leaders. Through persistence and collaboration, I launched a successful mentoring initiative that has since helped nurses find their footing and excel in their careers. My journey is a powerful reminder that visionary leadership can transform our profession. Here are a few ways you can start being a visionary leader: 1. Identify a Need: Look for areas in your workplace or community that need improvement. Your unique perspective can lead to innovative solutions. 2. Leverage Mentorship: Seek mentors who can guide you and provide support. Likewise, be a mentor to others, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration. 3. Breakthrough Barriers: Don’t let obstacles deter you. Use them as stepping stones to build resilience and find creative ways to overcome them. 4. Celebrate Diversity: Embrace and promote diversity within the nursing community. By supporting each other, we create a more inclusive and dynamic profession.
