S&D President Iratxe García Perez outlines our priorities for this plenary session

The following is an excerpt from a book on Napoleon Bonaparte, "Napoleon CEO" by Alan Axelrod. This excerpt indicates that great leadership, in any sphere of human activity, calls for greater clarity and 'Dig for the Details' in important undertakings of the enterprise. "I expected several pages and I get only two lines." - Letter to General Henri-Gatien Bertrand March 4, 1807 "Your letter tells me nothing," Napoleon wrote in disgust Henri-Gatien Bertrand, one of his most trusted lieutenants. He was disappointed by the cursory report Bertrand had provided on conditions in and about Danzig, which was to be the object of a siege. Napoleon wanted Bertrand to furnish the names of the enemy regiments, the names of their commanding generals, and "a hundred things, all very important," including the morale of the enemy, how they are fed, the strength of various units. This, Napoleon chided, should have filled several pages, not the two meager lines he had been sent. "Redeem all that by writing me in great detail." In today's corporate world too many managers live and die by the "executive summary." What most of us will make of a one-page outline of Shakespeare's Hamlet? Summaries kill rather than create practical, effective understanding. There is no shortcut to building a grasp of the truly important, high-stakes opportunities and problems.

Roll up roll up! Or sign up, Sign up - then show up! More today than ever we need to acknowledge the importance of true #humanitarian #leadership in extremely challenging times. On the front lines there are true leaders risking their lives every day and with little to no support. And yet organizations will be willing to pay for leadership development programs for HQ staff, who aren't risking their lives but are making decisions that affect those at risk. And the last two years we have witnessed such double standards and lack of integrity within our industry and sadly it's usually those most far away from the ground and who have most of the power making the decisions and so a lapse in integrity or shying away from thorny issues doesn't have the same immediate proximate implications and consequences as those affected by it in the places we are supporting. I always rely on listening to what #local #humanitarian #leadership says we should do and listen to their stories why! Study after study shows that what locals prioritise and what internationals (or even local staff in local organizations) is often different and I've referenced respected peers who have done this incredible work to highlight this whether it's Meg Sattler and team at Ground Truth Solutions in many places but recently #Gaza or the work that Lizz Harrison did on behalf of the Disasters Emergency Committee in #ukraine which we presented and discussed at the #LHL group of donors. The CHL sponsored conference in #Doha is going to be better than ever and we have so much to talk about and to inspire us to take bold action. I say the main reason for the failure of the #GrandBargain Commitments wasn't that they were the wrong plans or commitments. The problem is there was no "action plan" to monitor the leaders with the power to influence or implement, and either develop their leadership skills or put in place new humanitarian leadership with the courage, stamina, and integrity to see the plans through! I'm excited to see what this year's conference generates. And thank you 🙏 Centre for Humanitarian Leadership for all the hard work and thoughtful planning going into this and for making it more accessible to our humanitarian leaders, most of whom are in conflict and disaster affected countries anyway. May we convene, collectively grieve, celebrate, idéate, acknowledge, debate, talk about solutions and concrete ways to make them come to life - and then let us all put our best foot forward, inspired and with renewed hope and energy! For those who can, please consider sponsoring, funding or bringing the local humanitarian leaders whose budgets (squeezed by donors and intermediaries) may not allow them this "luxury". 🙏
