🌍 Driving Sustainable Agriculture in Africa Through Innovation and Trade 🌱 Africa is poised for a transformation in agriculture, driven by sustainable practices and regional trade initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). With the potential to increase intra-African agricultural trade by 574% by 2030, AfCFTA is creating unprecedented opportunities for farmers, innovators, and investors alike. At the heart of this transformation lies technology integration, addressing challenges in supply chains, enhancing productivity, and fostering climate resilience. Sustainable practices not only boost local economies but also pave the way for a more food-secure and inclusive future. Key takeaways from the World Economic Forum’s article: 🌾 Innovation in food systems is crucial for sustainability and economic growth. 🤝 Regional cooperation under AfCFTA is unlocking agricultural trade potential. 🌱 Investing in climate-resilient farming ensures long-term viability in the face of global challenges. By leveraging these strategies, Africa can lead the global shift toward sustainable food systems, benefiting millions of livelihoods and ensuring resilience for future generations. 📖 Read more about this transformative opportunity here: https://lnkd.in/epn2F72n #SustainableAgriculture #AfCFTA #AfricaGrowth #Innovation #ClimateResilience #FoodSecurity

[ICYMI] Africa's growing population and demand for food require rapid agricultural expansion, but this must be balanced with environmental protection. Sustainable land use offers a solution, enabling increased productivity while preserving natural resources. On how to harness this opportunity, CNBC Africa's Derrick Muhangi spoke with Amandla Ooko-Ombaka, Economist And Partner On Food Systems at Mckinsey Seattle on how Africa can ensure food security, support sustainable development, and become a leader in eco-friendly agriculture. We join the world on this #worldfoodday to champion for the #righttofood While African in the recent years have seen a rise in the innovative approaches and scientific research combined with traditional approach to agriculture in the aim of solving hunger, it is still not enough, as explained by World Economic Forum . Despite Africa resourcefulness in terms of year-round favourable climate, vast tracts of unused lands, and readily available human resource, the continent still imports $55 billion worth of food annually. Worse, if the innovation in Agriculture is not enhanced further, the value is expected to double by the year 2030 —the deadline for the United Nations Sustainable Develooment Goals. On this #worldfoodday, as an organization of young Agricultural, Environmental, soil, and water Engineers in Africa, we reflect on the urgent need to combat hunger and build sustainable food systems across Africa through science-based agriculture. We appreciate the effort and role played by international organizations (United Nations, FAO, The World Bank, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), among many others) and non-profit organizations in pushing for sustainable Agriculture and food systems in the continent. We at Kola & Manyala Agricultural Engineering Group (KMAEG) believe that with the right blend of science-based Agriculture, innovation, and collaboration, we can empower farmers, improve productivity, and reduce food insecurity. We are committed as young Engineers in the Agriculture, soil, and water field to play our part by promoting sustainable practices, supporting smallholders, and partnering with governments and organizations to create a food secure Africa. Together, we can transform Agriculture, fight hunger, and nourish the future continent. Attached is a short 1 min video.

🌍 A Macro and Micro Perspective to Sustainable Agriculture in Africa 🍃 I recently had the honour of participating in Agrilinks Webinar “Sustainable Food Systems: Building Resilience Together” facilitated by Feed the Futures and USAID In my remarks, I emphasised the crucial role of both public and private investment in creating sustainable food systems across Africa. From a macro lens, Africa is uniquely positioned to lead in sustainable agriculture. With vast arable land and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), we can scale climate-resilient farming, enhance trade, and boost local economies through sustainable value chains. We must move beyond treaties and policies and relentlessly focus on implementation and tangible action. But the real transformation starts at the micro level with the true change-makers - the smallholder farmers. They represent over 60% of Africa’s agricultural workforce and are key to unlocking a sustainable future. By promoting regenerative farming practices, increasing access to green finance, engaging grass-roots communities, and supporting local agro-processing, we can ensure that these farmers thrive in a climate-impacted world. The future of Africa’s food security will not only define the continent’s prosperity but will also be integral in ensuring global sustenance. 🌱🌍 Head over to https://lnkd.in/dgrgn-7w for the full webinar! #Sustainability #FoodSecurity #AgriTech #ClimateResilience #Africa #SustainableAgriculture #GreenFinance #WomenInAgriculture

Kenya's journey towards enhancing food systems is crucial for sustainable development. Today's piece in NationAfrica highlights the potential quick wins from investing in the agrifood sector. To address challenges like recent floods and soil degradation, focusing on improving soil health is key. Initiating soil testing and profiling can guide targeted interventions effectively. By establishing standards and frameworks for dry and wet soil testing mechanisms, and involving youth strategically, we can accelerate the transformation of the agrifood sector. Engaging in a public debate on this topic can lead to the generation of innovative policy directions aligned with national goals such as the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda, Vision 2030, Africa Union Agenda 2063, and sustainable development goals. Let's work together to drive impactful changes in Kenya's food systems for a sustainable future.
