🏝 Pleased to release the latest report in our new series on Transnational #OrganizedCrime and the #PacificIslands. 🏝 This time we look at a whole array of foreign companies and entrepreneurs running both legitimate businesses and illicit activities. Besides from the obvious money laundering, tax evasion and other financial crimes, it is striking to observe the extent to which many of these operations are linked to significant human exploitation and environmental degradation.

The Facts and Norms Institute has provided detailed feedback on the United Nations Draft Monitoring & Impact Assessment Tool for unilateral sanctions, leveraging its expertise in human rights research. This tool, developed in response to the growing use of sanctions and their complex effects on human rights, aims to offer a systematic way to assess these impacts. Contributing to this endeavor, the Institute, through representatives Leonel Lisboa and Henrique Napoleão Alves, has proposed several enhancements to the tool, stressing the importance of inclusivity, comprehensiveness, and evidence-based approaches. Their suggestions include a stronger emphasis on diverse perspectives, particularly from marginalized groups, and the inclusion of additional principles such as transparency, collaboration, and accountability. https://lnkd.in/dX3kuBSe

On October 10, 2023, the Facts and Norms Institute (FNI) submitted a written feedback to the UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights — a thorough analysis with suggestions about how to assess the human rights impacts of unilateral sanctions. FNI's researchers Leonel Lisboa and Henrique Napoleão Alves underscored the necessity for inclusivity, evidence-based approaches, and the consideration of sanctions' long-term effects on marginalized communities and sustainable development. On October 24, 2023, FNI has been extended an invitation to participate in a pivotal United Nations consultation. The session, focusing on the development of guiding principles on unilateral sanctions, over-compliance, and human rights, recognized the Institute's previous feedback to the UN. https://lnkd.in/dCgddgkv #InternationalLaw #PublicInternationalLaw #UNSpecialProcedures #SpecialProcedures #InternationalHumanRightsLaw #FNI #FactsAndNorms #IHRL #UN #UnitedNations #HumanRights #Sanctions #UnilateralSanctions
